WRIHW Newsletter 1

"I recommend biting off more than you can chew to anyone. I certainly do"    Alanis Morissette

Welcome to the WRIHW fortnightly newsletter.

We have emerged from this period of reflection with a new vision and a new strategy by which to achieve it. We want to effect change in your health and wellbeing, that of your loved ones, their loved ones...in fact everybody. Your work is crucial, important and transformative to this aim. Let us get together to address the beginning, the middle and the end of problems affecting our communities and together we will make it better.

This institute exists to enable its fellows to achieve more than they might by themselves, facilitating great minds to produce excellent outcomes and ultimately to change lives for the better.

Vision

"The Beginning, Middle and End"

Understanding a problem.
Understanding how it manifests itself in the individual and in the community.
Understanding ways in which we can mediate the problem effecting change via evidenced interventions.

We want to know what you think. We will be setting up some focus groups to discuss WRIHW activities. if you would like to be involved please email wolfson@durham.ac.uk

Strategy

The first way we do this by identifying themes across Durham University in an interdisciplinary fashion, encouraging dialogue and interaction in discussion, evidence gathering, evaluation and interpretation.

The second way is to target a societal question or problem and collate and gather Durham University research expertise to address the issue from an interdisciplinary approach.

How are we going to do this?

By funding Special Interest Groups (SIGs) that address coherent issues well, we move away from a model of 'Small Grants' to one of substantial support for groups of individuals to address our vision. Funding calls will be advertised in June of each year and awarded as per the Institute budget, allowing maximum time for completion of projects within the constraints of the annual budget structure. We can provide administrative support to SIGs in the form of meeting arrangements, event arrangements, and assistance with ordering and utilising moneys awarded from the WRIHW allowing academics to be academics.
If you would like to establish a new SIG please contact Paul Chazot to discuss.

Early Stage Researchers (ESRs)

Early Stage Researchers are an important part of the Wolfson Research Institute for Health and Wellbeing. They will have a core committee (which will change regularly) to co-ordinate ESR activities and a dedicated webpage where they have a focal point for engagement and research discussion.
Please contact us if you wish to be involved in ESR activities or have new ideas going forward. The WRIHW administration team and Associate Director are available for support of all ESR activities.
