Monthly meeting of the SHL non-fiction Book Club

January 22, 2017 4:00 pm

Barnes & Noble
1812 Sam Rittenberg Blvd
Charleston, SC

Meeting at the back of the Music Section, mid-right of the store

For January, we are discussion this month's selection: When Religion Becomes Evil by Charles Kimball (2009, 304p). The author is a leading religion and mid-East expert and his book presents an analysis of the factors of corruption in religion that lead to evil and violence in the world.

Join us for lively conversation even if you haven't read the material. We value a wealth of opinions on such weighty topics as these. Afterward we invite you to join us for dinner at a nearby restaurant where the conversation always continues.

If you like to read ahead, we selected for February a wonderful older book: It Can't Happen Here by Sinclair Lewis (1936). Surprisingly, Sinclair Lewis' darkly humorous tale of a fascist takeover in the US It Can't Happen Here has overtones familiar to Americans today. It starts with the highly, contested election of an oafish yet strangely charismatic president, who talks like a reformer.
