WINTER IS HERE

LAST DECEMBER, the Canada Council for the Arts launched its portal, an online platform developed to streamline funding applications from individual artists, groups, and organizations. As of April 2017, all applications will transit via this portal so everyone must create a profile (the equivalent of sections PART A5Structure of your organisation & PART BProfile of organization). Component guidelines and application forms have been posted.

Under the visual arts section, you can choose among the following organization profiles: Architectural Firm, Art Museum, Artist-Run Centre, Canadian national and international festivals, biennales and triennales, Contemporary art dealers, Magazines on the arts and literature, National Arts Service Organization, Public Art Gallery, University Gallery, Visual arts organization, Visual Art Publishers (yes!), and Visual Arts Support Organization. Since every account can have more than one profile (though it’s unclear at this stage if that offers an advantage or not), it’s worth exploring the funding possibilities of each and still delete profiles if you change your mind before submitting the form for validation.

It’s important to create your account and submit your profile or profiles at least one month before your next application deadline. The validation of your profile by the Canada Council for the Arts can take up to 15 days. The portal is also designed to receive applications for peer assessment duty. The Canada Council for the Arts is warning existing and new clients to avoid waiting to the last minute to register, so do it NOW!

Canada Council's Annual Public Meeting: Update on The New Chapter

On Tuesday January 17, we learned of the extraordinary response to the New Chapter program. It's surprising that Council is so surprised to have received 2,225 applications requesting more than $440 million! 552 applications were received in the first competition. Of these, 52 projects were awarded about 25 % of the total grant budget of $33.4 million and will receive grants ranging from 50K to 375K representing a success rate of barely 10%, which is much lower than usual.

Spring is coming

Council plans to invest $88.5 M directly into the arts sector over five years to support The arts in a digital world; this support aims to:
  • Support arts professionals so they can better understand the challenges, issues and opportunities in digital society; develop and enrich a strategic digital philosophy and increase their ability to translate it into useful and effective actions;
  • Increase the sharing of artistic and literary creation and access to works, enhance the quality of users’ artistic experience and broaden the participation and cultural engagement of Canadian citizens; and
  •  Support the transformation of arts organizations and their operational methods so that they are in a better position to meet the challenges and seize the opportunities of development and growth offered by digital technologies.
A national summit on the arts in a digital world will take place this spring in the form of an enormous workshop that will bring together more than 250 people selected and invited by the Council. Proceedings will be disseminated live and off-line. Council intends to lead by example by practicing the five fundamental characteristics of the digital culture: openness and sharing; focusing on the needs and experience of users (or in our case, citizens); co-creation; simplicity; and flexibility. We look forward to seeing the published list of invited participants, in the spirit of openness and sharing!

CARFAC Fee agreement renewal: update

ARCA, Canadian Art Museum Directors (CAMDO), and Canadian Museum Association (CMA) have met with CARFAC to discuss a proposed agreement renewal of the Fee schedule last renewed in 2013 with annual 3% increases to the exhibition fee. The 2017 recommended rate for organizations with annual operating budgets under $ 500,000 is now $1,957. Considering how our members’ funding has not increased at the same rate, the proposal for 2018 and 2019 is still under discussion and will require the support of our respective boards.

e-additions is a monthly chronicle featuring publications relevant to artist-run culture recently added to the e-artexte repository. The selection is based on the most recent additions to the database regardless of their date of publishing at times, bringing forgotten gems back into circulation.

Looking for a salary rate structure when filling out your grant applications? Until we update our own data with a new survey, ARCA recommends referring to the one produced by MDR Burgess for IMAA. It charts current salaries (the report was published in 2011) from low to high, and for each job category in addition to offering helpful resources.
