Did you know that 95% of all plants and trees on earth rely on fungus? A healthy forest also helps to ensure a greater abundance of edible mushrooms for us to forage.  If you care about our forests and mushrooming you won't want to miss this talk!
  • When: Wednesday, December 18th, from 7pm to 9pm
  • Where: Amazon Community Center, 2700 Hilyard St, Eugene, Oregon 97405

Dr. Jeff Stone will talk to us about “Fungal Pathogens of Forest trees and Ecology of Western Forests”. Jeff is a senior research professor in the department of Botany and Plant Pathology at OSU.  His research concerns fungal pathogens of forest trees and the role of tree diseases in forest ecology.  In addition to research on tree diseases Jeff teaches classes in plant pathology, plant ecology and economic botany through OSU ecampus, as well as introductory mycology at the University of Oregon.  He also served as the editor in chief of the Mycological  Society of America journal Mycologia, from 2009 to 2014.

The talk is free and open to the public. There will be a mushroom identification session prior to the speaker. Bring what’s in your basket, edible or not, and learn from the experienced members of our community.

Have you braved the cold and gone mushrooming?

Have you been out in the woods lately? Have you seen any mushrooms? How about edibles?  Most years we do have Hedgehogs, Winter Chanterelles, and Candy Cap mushrooms through February and sometimes into early March.  If you have been out and found edibles, please let us know.  You can post on Facebook, or send an email to forays@cascademcyo.org.  Don't worry we won't ask for your secret spot.  We would just like to know if anyone is finding anything and the general vicinity (e.g. coast, valley).

In case you missed it on Facebook ...

We always post CMS events and news on both the CMS website and CMS Facebook page.  But, most fungi news in public media is only posted to our Facebook page.  So, for those of you whose lives do not include Social Media, here is a sampling of what has been posted recently ...

Fungi and Gardening - Portland-based book publisher Timberpress released a book titled "Teaming with Fungi - The Organic Grower's Guide to Mycorrhizae" on January 11th.  Paul Stamets reviewed the book and had this to say - “Accomplishes what few other books have—helping growers use mycorrhizae to improve the immune systems of plants. This natural union between plants and fungi is the foundation of our food web.” —Paul Stamets, author of Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World.  For more information - Click Here
