WINTER IS AN IDEAL TIME TO OPEN THE LINES OF COMMUNICATION
With the flurry of holiday activity only a faint memory, the cold and darkness of winter can start to make parents feel a little isolated, especially when it comes to some of our children’s developmental concerns. What better time to reach out to other parents, forming new connections and strengthening old ones? Consider starting a Parent Network, which can give you the opportunity to socialize with parents of your children’s classmates and talk about what’s really going on in the lives of your school’s adolescents. It can be as simple as inviting a few friends over for coffee and casual conversation or as structured as an open grade-level parent meeting with an expert speaker on a specific parenting concern. B-PEN (Brookline Parent Education Network) can help with Parent Network resources at www.B-PEN.org, and Brookline’s Family Resource Advocate Hope Schroy can help facilitate the first meeting to help you get things rolling -- Hope_Schroy@psbma.org
PARENT-TO-PARENT DIVERSITY TIP SHEET: MLK Day often sparks conversation about the incredibly diverse world in which we live. In Brookline, it can be especially tricky to parent adolescents amidst our community’s remarkable diversity of race, cultural background, religion, the gender spectrum, and more. In response to parent questions and concerns, B-PEN helped facilitate parent/community connections that resulted in an excellent parent-created TIP SHEET ON DIVERSITY & CULTURAL COMPETENCY

Principal's Corner
(read on driscollpto.org here)

1/16/17

Dear Families,

In Alabama in 1957, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, what are you doing for others?”

We have used this quote and theme in our annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration for several years here at Driscoll, and it was a theme again this year at our celebration on Friday.  The 5th Grade Chorus and 8th Grade Students created a wonderful presentation that helped remind all of us of the importance of dreaming, of serving in order to achieve those dreams, and they reminded us that being “just one person” is not an excuse for not taking action.

Along with a variety of musical pieces, each year we sing “What Can One Little Person Do?”  Why this song? Because even one little person can do a lot!  I encourage you to sing it at home!  (There are lots of links out there and your kids know the song!)

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to make a plan for even some small acts of service.  The important thing is that kids (and adults!) practice setting aside their needs of the moment to consider others.  With my 3 year old, we kept our service very simple: giving drawings to some neighbors who don’t get visitors very often.  The important thing was that we had to set the toys aside for a minute and think of someone else.  Separating from our toys and screens for someone else can certainly be a challenge for children of all ages.  But, even this is a skill we can and should teach!

During our assembly, our wonderful 5th Grade Chorus presented words and songs from a book we’ve used in past years: Giant Steps to Change the World by Spike Lee and Tonya Lewis Lee.  Reading this book together at home is another great way to start the conversation and we have copies of this book in our classroom and school libraries.  Just ask!

We hope that students did walk away thinking about service on Friday and we hope you’ll continue this conversation at home to help kids practice those skills they need to literally change the world.  And don’t forget, when you do serve others, you get an added benefit:  it feels awesome!

Warmly,

Heidi
