Are you plugged in?

JANUARY 2017
“But, Grandma, you aren’t plugged in!” These were words spoken as we tried to play a game my granddaughter had received for Christmas. Those words can ring true for us as members of the Emmaus Community, too.

As we open this gift of another year, there are so many opportunities to serve in 2017. Have we thought about those possibilities? Have we “plugged in?” Check out our website (www.midohiovalleyemmaus.org). Begin to pray for future walks and those that God would have attend a walk.  Is God asking you to sponsor someone? Plan to make agape with friends or your share group. Place Emmaus happenings on your calendar.

Speaking of “happenings”, we hope to see you at the first gathering of the year on Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church in Marietta. Bring a friend and “plug in.”

Speaking of plugging in ...
Hello Emmaus friends!

We co-chair your Good Shepherd position on the Emmaus board, and we need your help.  Emmaus is not only about the walks.  We need to turn our focus to the walks being just the first step to encouraging our sponsored pilgrims onward to a committed relationship with Jesus.  Please continue to lead your pilgrims after their walks to CARE GROUPS (also called share groups or reunion groups), either your own, or help them to form one. Invite your pilgrims to each gathering, helping with transportation or other obstacles to their attendance. Ask them to join you in your walk duties in the kitchen or logistics, candlelight, closing, and share the ride to the camp.  Sponsor an agape-making evening with them.  Support them in sponsoring a pilgrim on the next walk.

We are looking forward to serving you and with you in 2017.  Good, good things will happen in our community if we all put our focus in the important areas of life.  We thank you in advance for being a door for His love to walk through.

De Colores,

Jon and Crysta Bourdon

Q & A

Question: How does the Board notify the community if a gathering or event must be cancelled due to weather and/or road conditions?

Answer: The Board will make every effort to give advance notice via e-mail and Facebook postings.
Registrar news

The spring walks are getting close, the teams are being put in place and the time for sponsorship is here. I am pleased to report that the application process is picking up and looks like we are in for a GREAT men’s walk. I encourage anyone that is planning to sponsor a pilgrim for one of the spring walks to visit our website and check out the forms as they have been updated. It is important that the pilgrim application, pilgrim medical form, sponsor application and the minimum application fee of $25 be sent in together.

There has also been a change in the scholarship program as there is now a form required to be included with the application. The form will be reviewed by the scholarship committee for approval. There are guidelines that must be followed, so please contact me at rogerariggs@hotmail.com with any scholarship questions.

Thank You,
Roger A. Riggs
Registrar

Jacob's Ladder

Genesis 28: 11-22
When he reached a certain place, he (Jacob) stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it. There above it stood the Lord, and He said, "I am the Lord, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and y ou will spread out to the west and to the east, to the north and to the south. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you and your offspring. I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." When Jacob awoke from his sleep, he thought, "Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it." He was afraid, and said, "How awesome is this place! There is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven."

My children's piano lesson books are peppered with scripture, and my son was playing the familiar song "Jacob's Ladder." The book encouraged my son to read the story in Genesis and I realized I did not know the exact details of the story. I found it, and we read it together. I was struck by how awesome and purely simple this story really is. God will use whatever He can to get our attention, even if it comes to us in the form of a dream. He wanted Jacob to know as He wants us to know, all these years later, that He is with us! He will not leave us and will do what He has promised.

Aren't we like Jacob? God has been here all along and we didn't even know it. I love the imagery of the angels ascending and descending on the stairway. It's assurance that God continues to intervene in our everyday lives. He is with us, if we would only look around us.

It appears we currently have 12 pilgrims signed up.  We have challenged our team and would like to extend the challenge to our community to sponsor 30 men for this walk.  With not having a fall walk last year, we think it is important to "crush it" this spring to get things back on track and moving in the right direction.

We will be starting our team meetings Feb. 13 and are looking forward to the walk.
