January 20 - 26, 2017
As we're sure you're already aware, it's going to be an eventful weekend in DC! Our downtown Silver Spring and Dupont markets will both be open, so please swing by, especially if you have out-of-town company. Check out the Market Picks below for our recommendations on how to share a little local food love with your guests! If you're looking for places to eat and drink this weekend, consider visiting one (or more) of the businesses participating in All In Service DC. We are delighted to be partnering with so many great local businesses to benefit Matching Dollars. Wishing everyone a safe weekend, and as always, see you at market!

ALL IN SERVICE DC

All In Service DC celebrates DC’s diversity by giving back to local organizations that keep our community thriving. This inauguration weekend, restaurants, bars, and other businesses are donating a portion of sales to non-profits to make a statement of inclusion and love for community. We are thrilled that 14 amazing businesses have named us their beneficiary! From Friday through Sunday, vote with your wallet at these homegrown businesses, and a portion of their sales will go to support FRESHFARM's Matching Dollars - our project that works to make fresh, healthy foods accessible to all! Click here to see the complete list of businesses supporting FRESHFARM.

FUTURE HARVEST CASA'S CULTIVATE THE CHESAPEAKE FOODSHED CONFERENCE

Future Harvest CASA's Cultivate the Chesapeake Foodshed Conference took place in College Park, MD from January 12-14th. It brought together a group of greenhorns, veteran farmers, food producers, and other local businesses connected to the Chesapeake foodshed to share knowledge about how to promote and protect this valuable resource that we all share.

This year the program focused on two main points: business planning for greater farm profitability and farming systems that sequester carbon dioxide as an antidote to climate change. Alongside many of our farmers and producers, FRESHFARM staff went to learn and support the good work that is being done within our incredible community.

We learned how to use social media to make a farm brand go viral as well as the pros and cons of different market options. We were inspired by the words of Chris Blanchard, who shared how we can root our growth in good business, while not losing sight of the fertile values in which that growth occurs. We all stood in applause as Dr. Kristine Nichols of The Rodale Institute taught us that we stand on the front lines of pulling CO2 out of the air and putting it into the ground where it can actually do good and help push back the impending stress of climate change. But most importantly of all, we were reminded that it is only in working together that we will successfully change the course of our agricultural communities and lead them to a place of health and sustainability for all. - Amber Breitenberg, Senior Market Manager

INSTAGRAM OF THE WEEK

Even in the winter, farms are living things. The Farm at Sunnyside is looking great with their fields of cover crops. These crops - typically legumes and  grasses such as clover, alfalfa, rye, wheat, barley, and oats - will be turned back into the soil come spring. Cover crops are critical to organic farming: their roots aerate the soil, they protect the land from erosion during the slushy winter months. and they return nutrients to the field when they are tilled in the spring. Follow @thefarmatsunnyside for an inside look at life on the farm! And use the tag #mywintermarket in your own posts for a chance to be featured.

Help a Farmer Fund Her Education

Georgia O'Neal, wife of Zach Lester of Tree and Leaf Farm, is raising money to pay for tuition to get a teaching certificate and become an art teacher. Help Georgia fulfill her dream to make a difference in children's lives through art, and help her family with a much-needed secondary source of income. Donate to her Generosity campaign.

Volunteer With FoodPrints

FoodPrints is seeking volunteers to assist with weekly food shopping for FoodPrints classes. Every Sunday, a FRESHFARM team member bulk purchases from farms and uses coolers to divide and distribute necessary items to each school. Volunteers help organize and distribute the correct produce that corresponds to school shopping lists. This requires working outside, occasional heavy lifting, frequent bending, and attention to detail. FoodPrints needs volunteers every Sunday, 10:15 to 11:45am (January-March) and 8:30 to 10:30am (March-June). Sign up here.

Wholesale Success Workshop | Monday - Tuesday, January 23 - 24

Meeting the needs and values of produce buyers is fundamental to creating a healthy long-term relationship. How to actively seek buyers is just the start. Who is your customer and why do they buy? Maintaining the relationship requires attention to details from bunch sizes, labels, and lot codes, contracts, pricing, communication, sequential planting, quality control, trends and more. Learn how to serve the wholesale market and make your farm a highly desired source of fresh produce. This two-day workshop will take place at Fox Haven Organic Farm and Learning Center in Jefferson, MD. More information.
