TRIBE Community Update
17 January 2017
Well we are definitely in the thick of event season with something going on around the Country most weekends. Highlight for me was seeing Garth Barfoot racing at Port of Tauranga Half and being crowned the National Champion. All of this after a tramping accident a week before that almost took him out of contention - an inspiration as always! The other thing I love after New Year is seeing the swell in club numbers as people seek triathlon as a way to realise their 2017 goals of being more healthy and active. I hope you're all embracing these 'newbies' with open arms!
This newsletter features LOTS of results, Port of Tauranga Half, Tri Series Wanaka, and updated Age Grouper of the Year points. We also announce UDC Finance XTERRA Triathlon (Motatapu) as the selection race for Cross-Tri World Championships. More information on this found below.
We are now at over 1300 members of TRIBE for 2016/17, thanks to all those who have joined, it makes a huge difference and we really appreciate it.
Do you use Training Peaks to help you achieve your goals? We have partnered with Training Peaks to give you 20% your premium membership. All information in your sign-up email.
And don't forget our partnership with PICS PEANUT BUTTER! Receive 20% off online purchases until the end of January!
Also we have joined up with the creaters of 'the stick', the ultimate tool for easing tight muscles and knots, as used by THE MAN himself Cameron Brown!
What an amazing event! This has always been a favourite and this year didn't disappoint with amazing weather, great crowds, and some epic competition! The Port of Tauranga Half doubles as the Tri NZ National Long Distance Championship and it was great to see some hard fought battles out there, particularly in the 'older' age groups where some of these athletes have been racing each other for decades.
Congratulations to all of our National Champions who competed at Port of Tauranga Half! This race is also a points race for Tri NZ Age Grouper of the Year.

Periodisation and Mixed Training
by Joe Friel
In the last couple of years, I’ve been thinking a lot about periodization of intensity. It started when I was reading research on the aerobic capacity declines common in 50+ year-old endurance athletes for a book I was writing- Fast After 50. But research also reveals that even highly trained endurance athletes over the rather youthful age of 35 lose both aerobic and anaerobic capacity at an average rate of about 8 percent per decade. Why does it decline so rapidly even in these younger athletes?
