Policy Analysis on Pakistan

An analytical review of Pakistan's 2016-17 budget

Pakistan's federal budget is one of the most important policy statements the government makes each year. But budgets suffer from weak policy priorities and inaccurate projections of balances and economic indicators. In a new analysis, former World Bank Senior Economist Hanid Mukhtar and IDEAS Senior Fellow Anjum Nasim argue that the 2016-17 budget repeats the same mistakes as past budgets, worsening prospects for successful economic growth. They provide a detailed overview of Pakistan's recent budgetary history, along with an explanation and assessment of the current budget's measures.

What can history teach us about CPEC?

There was once a large series of foreign investments made in what is now Pakistan that could have been considered an economic corridor like CPEC. During the colonial era, the British upgraded roads, built railways and expanded irrigation networks. In his latest op-ed for Dawn, CDPR Fellow Anjum Altaf argues that the success or failure of those projects can help inform our assessments of current infrastructure developments funded by China.

About CDPR
In Pakistan, policy decisions and public discourse are often uninformed by available research. The Consortium for Development Policy Research (CDPR) bridges this gap by communicating cutting-edge, evidence-based research on development issues in Pakistan to an audience of policymakers, students, the media and the wider public. With support from the International Growth Centre (IGC), CDPR disseminates policy briefs, hosts events, engages with the media and produces digital content to make topics in development research such as economic growth, energy, education, health and governance intelligible to both decision makers and the public.
