125 años al servicio de la educación

1892 - 2017

Kids and Pets-A Winning Combination!

One of the many surprises at SEK Guatemala this year, are two cute, little grey rabbits that will keep our students company. Students welcomed the new neighbors with great interest and enthusiasm.
Here are 5 reasons why pets enrich the school experience:
  1. Observing and caring for an animal instills a sense of responsibility and respect for life.
  2. Helping to take care of a pet gives children a sense of pride and accomplishment, helping them to build self esteem.
  3. A pet brings increased sensitivity and awareness of the feelings and needs of others—both animals and humans.
  4. Students learn that all living things need more than just food and water for survival.
  5. Pets stimulate learning and are wonderful resources for teachers to make learning fun in all subjects! Be it Science (“what does a rabbit eat? How many offspring do they have at a time?”) Geography (“what part of the world do rabbits come from?”) or English (“what words would we use to describe the rabbit’s fur?”) students will approach learning these subjects with new interest.

Still under adaptation phase, the bunnies can only be enjoyed from a distance nowadays, but soon students will be able to feed them, look after them and take them home on weekends and holidays.

Dream Zone

My Experience at St. John´s

"My time in St. John´s International School was the first time I ever left my home for so long, I had no idea what to expect in general, since I had never left the American continent, and I was nervous that it could possibly be too different and that I wouldn´t be able to adapt. The minute I met the other short-course students like myself, though; people from all over the globe who were going through the same cultural shock as me, I knew I would be perfectly fine. My roommate, who was from Costa Rica, was great throughout the whole term, always lending a hand when needed much like our dorm neighbors. I was able to make new friends from Chile, Mexico, China, England and even New Zealand, and I am certain that these are friendships for life. I thank St. John´s for this wonderful opportunity and I know I will always remember my time there with a smile."- Chloe Mazariegos.

"Going to St. John´s was for sure one of the most incredible experiences I´ve ever had. I made unforgetable friends with whom I created many memories and look foward to seeing them again. I learned to play rugby and it quickly became my favorite sport, not to mention everything I learned in school and how much my english improved. Filled with new stories to tell, I came back knowing I lived something many only dream of." -Raúl Aldana

"In St. John´s we made unforgettable friends. It was my new home and family. I think it was the best experience of my whole life. The personal of the school was amazing and very kind. I learned a lot of new things, and my english improved so much. I am so thankful with St. John´s." - Anayansi Bran

Word Detectives

This week the children in Year 5 have been investigating words.  They have been “Word Detectives”!

Many words being used today have made their way into our language from other countries e.g. macaroni and stiletto from Italy, bungalow from India, tea from China and others we can trace back to a Latin origin.  Learning Latin in Year 6 certainly helps us to understand the meanings of many words.

Our next step is to search for the latest words to enter our language and this is happening even today.

  Sidmouth in Bloom

For the 2nd year running, St John's has been awarded the trophy by the Sidmouth in Bloom committee for the 'Best contribution to community life', beating the other four local schools in the area.

We now have two teams involved in the community project: from the Senior school, Year 7 design and plant the flowerbed in the Connaught Gardens and from the Primary school, Year 1 and 2 plant up the urns around the town.

It is a great way for our pupils to learn about horticulture but it also gives the school an opportunity to contribute to the community around us; the floral displays are always appreciated by locals and tourists alike.

The picture below shows all of the pupils who have taken part in the project in recent years.
