Dear Parents, Guardians, Alumni, Parishioners, and Friends of Assumption-St. Bridget School,

MAP testing has begun this week and will continue into next week as well.  We will make every attempt to give students a make up time if at all possible.  Well-rested, well-fed and focused students make for effective test takers!  As teachers, we look forward to seeing the data generated because we then have time to adjust our instruction and target it for individual students and whole classes.  MAP reports will be sent home towards the end of January or beginning of February.
We have completed the classroom geography bees in grades 4-8.  Congratulations to the following students who will advance to our school level geography bee on Tuesday, January 31 :  Shale Smith and  Logan Presnal -4th grade, Alex Allard and Kris Sekhar-5th grade, Kate Matter and Cole Wagner- 6th grade, Maddy Beer and Maren Wegley- 7th grade, and Emily Allard and Nate Russell -8th grade!  Excellent work and we look forward to seeing these students at the school level bee.  Parents and guests are welcome to attend as well on January 31 at 8:50 a.m. in the Assumption Gymnasium.
ASB is continuing to advance with our partnering architects, Integrus Architecture, and partnering fundraising consultants, Optimus Fundraising, regarding our new construction and modernization/renovation project!  We are now at a point that we are actively seeking an ASB school representative to interface with all related services and the City of Seattle, along with the Archdiocese of Seattle.  Click here for a job description and posting then contact me, Principal Christina Vierra McGill, via email with resume, three reference letters and cover letter.  Experience in construction and/or building related services is preferred. Thank you for circulating this exciting position around to all you know!
We continue to emphasize and build number sense within our school-wide math program. As you may know, there has been a move away from speed and memory-based learning of mathematics in isolation, without the depth of concept solidification. Here is a link to a short article summarizing a worldwide study of math students by Stanford Professor of Mathematics Education, Dr. Jo Boaler. In summary:"Research shows that an emphasis on memorization, rote procedures and speed impairs learning and achievement."  Thanks to the many parents who continue to ask quality questions about this instructional and learning shift!

In Christ's peace,
Christina Vierra McGill

Immunization Warning!
As you may know, many cases of mumps are showing up in King County, (123 cases at last count). Please watch your students closely for signs and symptoms, including: fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, loss of appetite, and/or swollen, tender salivary glands under the jaw or in the lower cheeks. If you notice these in your student, please contact their health care provider immediately. Fortunately, students who have been vaccinated are far less likely to get mumps, and if they do, are less likely to have a severe case. Please ensure that your student has been thoroughly vaccinated. Be advised: there is a possibility that if a case occurs in our school community, students who have not been fully vaccinated may need to be excluded from school for at least 25 days for their own and the community's safety. Thank you for your attention.

You should all have received - by email - a final auction receipt. If you can not find yours, please email Jana and she can email your receipt to you. If your company matches, you can match anything above the fair market value! And, all fund-a-need and wish list donations are 100% eligible for matching at most companies.

Thank you letters for auction items donated, as well as information on all donations given in 2016, are also in the works. These take a bit of time to produce, but we hope to get these to you in a few weeks.

If you have any questions, please email Jana. Thanks!

I am still waiting for applications from a few current ASB families who have incoming PreK students or Kindergartners this Fall.  If you have a younger child at home who will be entering PreK OR Kindergarten in the fall, I need to hear from you ASAP!  As a current ASB family, you have priority admission status, but I need to anticipate who will be here next year.

Acceptance letters have started to go out for PreK & Kindergarten... with current families hearing from us first, then parishioners and then out-of-parish families next (letters will continue to go out throughout January). Please continue to spread the word, as we are still accepting apps for next year's PreK, Kindergarten & especially grades 2 & 4!

Can you help with the Open House?  I need assistance posting yard signs and posters (at businesses & preschools), as well as Parent Ambassadors to help day-of. Please email me if you are willing and able to spare an hour or two. Thanks!

Tuition Assistance is available for 2017-18, and the application window is now open. Click here for application instructions and information on Tuition Assistance through the Fulcrum Foundation or ASB. The application deadline for Fulcrum was January 6, 2017, and the ASB deadline is February 10, 2017. Questions?  Email Ceceila Davison.
