2017 Legislative Meet-ups
This year our regional advocacy efforts expand with seven legislative events providing an opportunity to meet with your legislators and speak with them firsthand about issues affecting you and your library. Library trustees, directors, and staff from public, school, and academic libraries are encouraged to attend and participate. Use this opportunity for photo ops with your elected officials to post on your Facebook page or to invite them to visit your library!

Illinois Library Trustee Forum Workshop

Join library trustees from around the state for a full day of learning and networking. Registration includes a full day of programming, a continental breakfast, buffet luncheon, and coffee breaks.

 Kristin Pekoll, assistant director of ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom, will present the morning program, Stop Censorship in its Stacks. Kristin has a special soft spot for the former West Bend (WI) Library trustees who stood with her during their well-publicized book challenge in 2009. If it wasn’t for her amazing library board, Kristin would not be sharing her passion for the freedom to read with the 2017 ILA Trustee Forum attendees. Her former trustees have mentored and encouraged her as a librarian and intellectual freedom advocate. Armed with personal experience with book challenges and professional resources gained at OIF, she has designed an interactive session that will prepare and strengthen trustees for their vital role in honoring this core value of America’s libraries.
The afternoon session continues with a Legislative Update from ILA Legislative Consultant Derek Blaida and a Legal Q&A with Roger Ritzman, of Peregrine, Stime, Newman, Ritzman & Bruckner, Ltd.

Create Your Adventure at IYSI 2017!
March 10-11, Crowne Plaza Springfield
This year's Illinois Youth Services Institute focuses on the power of play and adventure. Children and teen services' staff will share their experiences and best practices for serving youth. Formal sessions, vendor exhibits, and hands-on learning, combined with networking opportunities, will create a dynamic and collaborative learning environment for all.

Freedom, Curiosity, and Risk: How a Library is Like an Adventure Playground
Adventure playgrounds have existed since WWII, giving urban children the chance to build their own environments using scrap lumber, piles of dirt, hand tools, and anything else they can find. While children on adventure playgrounds may be often covered in mud and shouting, there are many philosophical alignments between these sites and public libraries.

Dream it, See it, Touch it, Link it: The Narrative of Nature Play
Nature play and storytelling are far from mutually exclusive. Outdoor adventure play and storytelling are universal human activities that support successful social, emotional and intellectual development. Through shared stories children build more than linguistic understanding, but derive cultural meaning, social rules, and religious beliefs. Through nature play children build more than muscle -- they explore boundaries, build critical observation skills and contextualize experiences from all other sources to construct personal and social meaning.

Reaching Forward Performers' Showcase
 The 28th Annual Reaching Forward Conference will be held Friday, May 5, at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont.
The conference will feature a Performers' Showcase, an opportunity for youth and adult performers to briefly showcase their talents to an audience of library programmers. Do you know a great performer that we should highlight? Please encourage your favorite performers and presenters to apply for the Showcase. The deadline is February 10.

Submit Your Conference Program Proposal
Libraries of all types foster diversity, engage community, and champion social justice. The 2017 ILA Conference, Rise Up!, is a chance for us to come together and share our ideas to better our communities, our institutions, and ourselves. How are you making a difference? What are you doing to improve your library and uplift your patrons? Tell us about it. Illinois libraries of all sizes and types make big impacts on their unique communities. Our conference should represent diversity throughout our state and we especially encourage submissions from typically underrepresented perspectives.
The deadline for submission is Friday, March 24.
