A Work/Life Newsletter To Help You Reach Your Potential

Dear Friends,

This Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and the following Saturday countless women and men will be marching in DC at the Women’s March. I will be headed to the LA women’s march with my family on the same day - let me know if you want to join us. Both the holiday and the march are reminders that there are so many ways to stand for justice, and to show our teams, our children and our friends what it looks like to speak up not just for ourselves, but for others who might not have the voice to self-advocate.

After I gave a talk at Evite this week, a woman approached me and said that she has two kids and a busy job and is overwhelmed. "Do you and your husband really split everything on the home front?" she asked incredulously. I said "yes" but explained that it is constantly fluid and ever changing and I shared this story...

I have a big deadline on a project and I was scheduled to chaperone an all day Kindergarten school field trip today. I asked my husband to take it on so I could work, and he said he couldn't swing it. I didn't want to disappoint my son, so my husband and I agreed that I will go on the field trip and then I will come back and work until 10pm while he handles dinner and bedtime. That was our compromise, and that is how we do it!

It is a constant dialogue, lots of negotiation and is wonderfully imperfect, but it all shakes out in the end.
