The Book Tour starts Jan 31

Happy 2017! Before I share a few royalty-free photo sites that can help you enhance your content, I'd like to invite you to attend one of my book tour events with my co-author Beth Kanter. Special thanks to our major sponsor Cabot Creamery and their giving program Reward Volunteers. And thanks to Shareable.net for their support.
We'll be in San Francisco, Oakland, Boston, and Washington DC. Hope to see you on the road! On with stock photos...

Stock Photo Resources

Many stock photos can look, well, like stock photos. In this day and age of online content publishing and "keeping it real," you still may need to "fake real" now and then to get the look you want. Is that a crime? We can't all be a professional photographer or afford to hire one, right?

Here are a few stock photo resources that can help.

1. Visual Hunt

A meta search for free, high quality visuals, particularly Creative Commons. Clear attribution instructions, optional sign in. Can be a bit random.

2. Pixabay

Stock photos, vectors and illustrations from international sources so you will find images you won't see on the U.S.-based sites. Great selection of other people's high-quality snapshots that "feel real." You can download without logging in, but you have to fill in a Captcha over and over again.

3. FreeImages.com

This is still my go to for free basic images of scenes and objects. The people shots tend to look awkward, but if you need a photo of a flower or a laptop or a mountain, this is a good resource. Wants you to log in.

4. Makerstock

Makerstock claims to gather hand-picked stock photos, and I have to say the quality is pretty terrific. Clean and modern looking shots. My new favorite.

Happy photo hunting!
