Colonel Harland Sanders Foundation Awards First Place $200,000

The First Place National Leadership Institute is now home to the Colonel Harland Sanders Center for Applied Research, thanks to a $200,000 grant from the Colonel Harland Sanders Foundation of Canada. The institute’s other centers include the Maricopa County IDA Center for Education, Training & Employment and the Mulzet Center for Expression. Centers not yet named are Real Estate & Community Development and Public Policy.




DPJ: SARRC to Operate Beneficial Beans Café at Burton Barr Central Library

The Phoenix City Council approved a contract permitting SARRC to occupy vacant café space located inside Burton Barr Central Library, a short light rail ride from First Place. The five-year contract permits the operation of SARRC’s social enterprise program Beneficial Beans Café. First Place looks forward to its Transition Academy participants serving as interns at the new Beneficial Beans Café.​ Read the Downtown Phoenix Journal article.

First Place Welcomes Encore Fellow

Quinn Merrell is a 26-year veteran of Intel Corporation in Chandler. He retired in 2016 and now serves as an Encore Fellow with First Place AZ, our second Encore Fellow thanks to Intel and Experience Matters AZ. Quinn’s responsibilities include developing technology strategies, aligned with operations, marketing, communications and the work of the First Place National Leadership Institute.
