Q&A with a Cannonballer: the one, the only, MsWas!

MsWas has been the Cannonball Queen for a few years now, streamlining the process and increasing participation by leaps and bounds. Let's see what goes on in her book-addled brain...

How did you become Coordinator of Cannonball Read? Did you start out as a participant?

Cannonball Read 2 was my first time as a participant - here’s my first review! At the end of CBR3, Tamatha asked me to take over running CBR4. That Read and CBR5 were standalone blogs over at wordpress.com, and our reviews would go up daily over at Pajiba. For CBR6 though, Pajiba just couldn’t devote columns to us any longer, so they offered us the daily Pajiba Love items, and I bought the domain name cannonballread.com. Three years later and voilà!

Welcome to Cannonball Read 9!

If you're new, welcome to this wonderfully weird corner of the internet and its accompanying monthly newsletter! If you're a returning reviewer, welcome back and thanks for your continued support and awesomeness. Here are a few tidbits for newbies and vets to remember:

Registration has been extended until January 20, so if you have friends/family who are on the fence, there's still time to sign up!

Some seriously impressive stats

Our tireless statistician ingres77 has compiled the December and end-of-year stats, and wow. We posted 3,451 reviews in 2016! Good job, everybody, and here's to an equally fun and informative Cannonball Read 9.

Record-breaking donations

Those 3,451 reviews did more than overwhelm everybody's To Be Read list. Cannonball Read 8 also raised $1,275 for the American Cancer Society in 2016! The last $300 of that was raised on December 31, and was matched by the American Cancer Society. For comparison's sake, CBR7 donated $435 to the American Cancer Society, and CBR6 raised $430. So we've set the bar high for CBR9. You guys are seriously amazing.

First #CannonBookClub of the year: Fantasy

We're diving right in to book discussions this year. Vote for the fantasy novel you'd like to read, and then join us March 8 for a lively virtual book club. You have until January 17 to vote, so you have a few days to dither over the many excellent choices faintingviolet has put together for us.

Wrapping up CBR8

Please check the final Leaderboard for last year and make sure your count is accurate. We want you to get credit for every last review! If you forgot, don't fret. Contact MsWas and she can update it for you.

Cue the makeover montage

Did you notice the CBR site got a new look this year? What do you think of the redesign? Are there features you miss? Features you'd like to see? Love/hate the new colors and logo? Let MsWas know if you have any requests or suggestions. No promises, but we'll do what we can to make things as swell as possible!

Jan 13, 2017 02:50 pm

You’re not allowed to cry. It’s one of the rules.

Jan 13, 2017 10:52 am
Few things are as satisfying as starting a book and realizing you’re going to sit there and read it straight through.  It is such a wonderful moment where you know this is your life’s purpose for the next few hours and you can measure your next bit of existing by […]

Ken Loach by way of Faulkner

Jan 13, 2017 10:31 am
Last Orders is about a group of men tasked with taking their friend’s ashes to the seaside. Not a truly novel concept, but well executed through some quality storytelling and narrative focus. This novel has several different narrators, spans multiple timelines, and deals with the inner workings of the type […]

Princess Leia takes center stage in the excellent Star Wars: Bloodline

Jan 13, 2017 10:22 am
This new iteration of Star Wars since Disney purchased them a few years back is not the Star Wars that we grew up on. While The Force Awakens largely played it safe there were a few key differences that have set the continuation of the story apart. First, most of […]

“Stories are the wildest things of all”

Jan 13, 2017 10:21 am
This one packs a wallop in a short amount of time. I have been lucky that, even as an adult, I don’t have a lot of experience watching a loved one suffer for a long time from cancer or any other illness. In a Monster Calls thirteen year old Conor O’Malley, […]

Probably Don’t Start with book 5 in this series

Jan 13, 2017 10:19 am
Who am I kidding? If you read the first four Mistborn novels, you’re likely going to read this one. If you didn’t, well, I don’t know what to tell you.   It’s not that Brandon Sanderson novels are without teeth, but he’s almost goofily squeamish about sex and sexuality. They […]

Nabokov by way of Evelyn Waugh?

Jan 13, 2017 10:16 am
So you know how you were saying you wanted to read soap operas written by philosophers? Ok, but still, you should. She wrote 26 or so novels from 1956-1995. A few years after her last novel, she died of Alzheimer’s, the story of which you can see in the movie […]

Did you like Sing Street? Did you find to be a little too washed over and sanitary? Is that a crazy sentence when I type it? Maybe this book is for you? When I was a kid, we had some movie we bought on VHS that had a trailer for […]

Story of a Life, kind of

Jan 13, 2017 10:09 am
This novel won the Pulitzer in 1995. The author is Canadian. My poetry professor in college recommended me this book 15 years ago. That’s everything I knew about this novel going in. It’s a good novel. It really is. It’s kind of a novel’s novel. What I mean by this is […]

Quotation marks exist for a reason, for the love of God!!

Jan 13, 2017 12:43 am
So far, my CBR9 experience has just been about book club selections.  This likely wouldn’t have been a selection of my own choosing, but it is what it is.  I’m powering through my ‘required reading’ first, hoping to get to some of MY picks next week (I’m looking at […]
