President's Message

It has been an honor and privilege to serve as SRM President over the last year.  I have the greatest appreciation and respect for all of the other officers, Board members and staff with whom I have shared this experience.  It was my fortune to be able to serve 3 years on the SRM Board as a Director, followed immediately by 3 years as an officer.  That allowed a great amount of training for me as well as continuity of ideas, initiatives and the follow through on new directions that were not always popular, but necessary for SRM to be able to regain fiscal stability and extend its influence beyond traditional reaches.

Through these years, SRM has shifted from a completely in-house permanent staff to a mixed model of in-house and contracted staff.  While there were rough spots as we merged these two approaches, a combination of patience and good will of staff members and skillful leadership of several of our immediate past presidents has resulted in an SRM staff that is efficient and where staff are performing jobs for which they have specific training and demonstrated competence.

SRM has made strategic changes in our infrastructure.  Physically, we have moved the SRM Denver office to a modern office suite more suited to our needs and new structure. The old building was sold and the equity was put into a building reserve account which generates interest used to off-set the rental of the current space.  We have also changed the publisher for SRM journals.  Our new publisher is Elsevier and this change has proven to expand the readership of our publications as well as increasing our profits beyond expectation.  The increased profit has allowed us to offer electronic issues of Rangelands and now, beginning 2017 – REM, as a benefit of your annual membership.  The most recent change is the complete redesign of the SRM Website, which was recently launched.  We believe that this new design will better serve the SRM membership and will be much easier to use.  We look forward to your input as we strive to make this a useful and up-to-date tool for all who are interested in Rangelands and those who use and manage them.

We have also modified the way that we approach our Annual Meeting and Training Sessions.  Now, each SRM Section selected to host an Annual Meeting generates a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that is negotiated with the Board.  This contract allows each organizing committee to do things each year in ways that draw upon their individual strengths, contacts and location to make the Annual Meeting more successful and more profitable to both the Section and SRM in general.  That, along with consistent help and guidance from our SRM staff, has increased revenues which in turn has allowed SRM to not only take care of business, but begin to rebuild reserves and invest in strategies to strengthen our future.

Our focus over recent years in building relationships with sister conservation oriented societies and being actively involved in issues at a national level has increased SRM’s exposure and influence.  The constant working of our staff, with agency leads and SRM leadership fly-ins to visit agency heads and Cabinet representatives, has led to the recognition of SRM as the place to turn for training and expertise in rangeland issues.

The work of SRM is never done.  More and more users on rangelands, and recognition of the intrinsic values of these lands and rangelands worldwide, bring higher scrutiny; and often times, conflicts.  SRM stands in the middle of these issues as a representative of the land and its proper management.  Over the 35 years of my involvement with SRM, I have been made aware of the many roles that members of SRM play in the use and conservation of rangelands at every level of management, and within the many associated disciplines.  I applaud your good work and valiant efforts, and pledge to continue with you to make rangelands a renewing resource that is well managed for the multiple uses and the generations of users to come.

Val Anderson, 2016 SRM President

Lost Resources

Rita Beard, Ft. Collins, CO
Rita Beard, a luminary in the federal and private sector of the invasive species world, passed away in October at her home in Fort Collins, CO. Throughout her career, Rita advanced her vision of coordinating invasive species management on a national scope. By encouraging collaboration from the field to congressional levels, she effectively changed the way invasive species are managed in this country. In addition, she worked to make sure that all invasive species management decisions were based on the latest and best available research and technology, thus ensuring that management decisions were supported by science.
