WASHINGTON WILD NEWS

8U Wild Host Burnaby Wildcats

The 8U Burnaby Wildcats took a road trip down to Highland Ice Arena this weekend for a two-game series with the 8U Washington Wild. A ton of excitement accompanied the first game, primarily for the promised post-game pizza party.

The first game ended in Burnaby's favor, but defense stepped up and limited more and more chances as the game progressed. A few rushes led to some good opportunities, and after 40 minutes of hard fought hockey, the girls were ready for their reward. During the shared pizza party, the Wild girls got to know their hockey sisters from across the border. With nearly 30 young hockey players in one room there was no end of talking, joking, and laughing until they couldn't eat anymore. Fueled by chocolate milk, pizza, and the chocolate skates that Burnaby brought for the Wild players, everyone returned went to bed happy and ready for another battle the next morning.

The second game again finished in Burnaby's favor, but the Wild generated many more offensive chances, passing the puck well, and clearing it out to the boards when necessary. Overall it was a great weekend of girls’ hockey that both teams will remember for a long time. Thanks for everyone that helped to host our guests from up north!

19U Rep A Wild Earn Success

The 19U Rep A Wild found themselves saddled with a crazy, five league-game weekend because of the demands of a compressed PCAHA season, attending a January tournament, and the PNAHA Washington State Development Camp. The Wild dug deep and came out 2-2-1 for the weekend. Each goal tender posted a shutout, six out of 10 skaters scored, and EVERY skater earned at least one point over the weekend. Way to go, Wild! What a team effort!

Beginners Having Wild Fun!

The Beginner class continues to have fun and develop their skills.

2017 PNAHA Washington State Female Development Camp Schedule

Eligible Washington female hockey players born in 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2003 participate in the State camp at the Xfinity Community Rink in Everett, January 28 & 29, 2017 per the schedule below.

Players improve and test their skills at the camp by playing with and against other female players from all over WA state in skill sessions (first day) and scrimmages (second day). Additional ice time, exposure to a broad pool of players and coaches, and the opportunity to compete at a higher level aid in players’ growth and development.  Players selected to move on will attend the USA Hockey Multi-District Camp in Colorado Springs, CO in June, which is a precursor to the USA Hockey National Camp. Last year, eight Wild players were selected from the WA state camp to attend the Pacific District camp!

WWFHA encourages Washington Wild players not participating to watch the event so they can see the top players in the state skate together, and for younger players to prepare for participation in the future.

The Experts’ Edge:
The Science of Scoring
(from the Ontario Minor Hockey Assoc.)

Every goal counts the same on the scoreboard. When the puck finds its way into the back of the net, there’s no reason not to celebrate. Coaches and players are always looking for the most efficient ways to score, and the answers may be hidden in the numbers.

Below is a list of all of the goals scored in the NHL last season. Each goal was detailed and charted on what type of shot it was and where on the ice it was scored from. While the analytics that have taken over sport can be overwhelming, this graphic provides a simple break down of what areas of the ice provided the most success.

Ask WWFHA

Q: What is High Performance Training?

A: It can be best defined as accelerating the rate of change. In the common vernacular, once the basic skill is attained, it is pushing players and coaches out of their “comfort zone”. High Performance people are often risk takers, and not afraid to make mistakes. Development occurs when players are out of their “comfort zone”.

“The secret of change is focusing energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new”. Socrates

Skills are developed with deep and deliberate (detailed) practice. The quality of practice has more impact on development than structured games. Athletes should learn the basic fundamental skills correctly at slower pace. As the skill is mastered, speed and intensity are increased. High Performance development requires attention to details.

If you are a person who loves the challenge of change, who looks at things in terms of how can they can be improved, then High Performance is for you. High Performance is really a mindset that actively seeks and embraces change.

USA Hockey in cooperation with the NHL has spent years studying age appropriate long term player development. We have documented the stages of development and published information on teaching concepts and how players learn (www.admkids.com). It should be noted that other NGBs, including Hockey Canada, have now begun to adopt the principles and concepts of the Long Term Athlete Development Model.

We need to address and refine the emphasis on teams winning at 16 & under. The emphasis on game driven programs and winning can result in short term satisfaction, but often diminishes long term development. Youth sports should be about kids and their passion, not about adults and their goals. We want to give each player the opportunity to reach their potential. The most dangerous phrase in this process is: “we have always done it this way”.
