Get Happy: 30 Day Challenge

Day 15: M
eat free Monday
Go meat free once a week (at least)
I’m not a vegetarian but I do believe that in the Western world we eat too much meat and this impacts not just our health but also our environment.  Todays challenge is to be meat free and make a vegetarian dinner tonight :-)

I’ve found that my health and weight have been at their best at times when I’ve not been eating much meat.  Meat has become cheap and plentiful and has increased in our diets with the popularity of Atkins and Paleo diets.  Now, I’m not a vegetarian, and I also believe meat has a fundamental role in our diet to provide us with iron and protein, but I do think we eat too much of it in the Western world.  I think this contributes to our health in the increase in heart disease and digestive disorders we are seeing and the impact on the environment is just as significant.  There is also the increase in greenhouse gas emissions associated with producing meat and the impact on water use and soil quality due to the large amount of feed that needs to be cultivated to feed our meat before we eat it.

Many of the world’s leading health organisations now encourage a reduction in the amount of meat people consume. The World Cancer Research Fund recommends we “choose mostly plant foods, limit red meat and avoid processed meat”. In 2010, a study carried out by Oxford University’s department of public health found that eating meat no more than three times a week could prevent 31,000 deaths from heart disease, 9,000 deaths from cancer and 5,000 deaths from stroke.

Launched by Paul, Mary and Stella McCartney in 2009, Meat Free Monday is a not-for-profit campaign which aims to raise awareness in this space and given it'll also mean you might try something new, get creative in the kitchen and have a delicious, nutritious dinner it's not bad for you happiness either!  Check out the website if you need some recipe inspiration
