EMPOWERING THE LIVES OF NATIVE AMERICANS IN THE PORTLAND AREA     JAN 27 2017

Bingo for Books Family Fun

Hosted by our very own Parent Involvement Advocate glamour girl, Shilo George, Southern Cheyenne, Arapaho, the family fun event on January 25th had over 100 attendees. Folks started off the evening sharing a meal of homemade chili provided by two of NAYA’s favorite aunties, Laura Booth and Tawna Sanchez.  Things got competitive as the elk-clad Shilo made participants wait in anticipation between calling numbers. Players young and old went home with an average of 3-4 books each. One participant, Lisa Comacho, Northern Arapaho, 10, was deep into her first Harry Potter book before the event had ended.

Students and Teachers Prepare for ECA Luncheon

Indigenous Education. Those two words make rare appearances together in our schools. But at our on-site high school, the Early College Academy (ECA), Indigenous Education is a way of life. Every day our students are given the culturally-specific supports that help them achieve their goals, graduate, go to college, and become successful community members.
Each spring NAYA celebrates the success of  the ECA and profiles the outstanding students at our annual Luncheon. Students and teachers are now beginning to prepare for the big day April 26th. For the high school, the ECA luncheon is the second biggest event of the year, after GRADUATION of course. Join in with community members around the idea of preparing our students for a better tomorrow and PURCHASE A TICKET OR SPONSORSHIP NOW!
When they thrive, so does the entire Metro region.
Join us as we celebrate Tawna Sanchez, Shoshone-Bannock, Ute, and Carrizo, Oregon’s 2nd Native American ever to be elected to the Legislature in Oregon, and the first to represent Portland.
Only days before the start of her first Legislative Session in Salem, let's show her at United with Leadership event this Monday, January 30th that we stand with her as she starts this journey.

All of NAYA's events can be found on our  up-to-date website calendar! Bookmark the page  and join us at Culture Night, Family Night, basketball games and so much more!
