WINTER LITERARY SERIES
kicks off this week!

We're so happy with the success of Spring and Summer Literary Series that we're expanding. This week sees the first event in our debut Winter Literary Series, in partnership with McNally Robinson Booksellers. Plus, see below for a special off-site event featuring Helen Humphreys.

An Evening with Eva Stachniak

Join us for the Winnipeg launch of the latest work from Eva Stachniak, author of internationally bestselling The Winter Palace, based on the life of Catherine the Great, and its follow up, Empress of the Night.

Her latest novel, The Chosen Maiden, is the story of two legendary dancers, Bronia Nijinska, and her brother Vaslav Nijinsky. Beautifully blending fiction with fact, it plunges readers into an artistic world upended by modernity, immersing the two in the experiences of the era's giants, from Anna Pavlova and Serge Diaghilev to Coco Chanel and Pablo Picasso.

The real-life muse behind one of the most spectacular roles in dance, The Rite of Spring's Chosen Maiden, Bronia rises to the heights of modern ballet through grit, resilience, and fervor. But when the First World War erupts and rebellion sparks in Russia, Bronia—caught between old and new, traditional and ground-breaking, safe and passionate—must begin her own search for what it means to be modern.

Eva Stachniak was born in Wrocław, Poland, and came to Canada in 1981. She has worked for Radio Canada International and Sheridan College, where she taught English and Humanities. Eva will read from The Chosen Maiden, then join Magdalena Blackmore from the Department of German and Slavic Studies, University of Manitoba, for an onstage conversation about the novel, followed by a book signing.

Come meet HELEN HUMPHREYS

We're happy to be partnering with Crescent Fort Rouge United Church as part of their Artfest celebration. Together with McNally Robinson, we're presenting one of Canada's most beloved writers, Helen Humphreys. She'll be in town for a special event on March 10th.

Helen Humphreys has published novels, poetry, and creative non-fiction. Her first novel, Leaving Earth, won the City of Toronto Book Award and was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Her second novel, Afterimage, won the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize, and her third, The Lost Garden, was a Canada Reads selection, a national bestseller, and also a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. Her latest novel, The Evening Chorus, was published in February, 2015 and was a finalist for the Governor General's Award for Fiction.

Helen will be talking about The River, her creative non-fiction meditation about a stretch of river in southern Ontario.

“Humphreys possesses extraordinary tools and wields them with daring and precision...The River takes breathtaking risks and holds treasures galore. This important work feels completely honest and earned.” — Quill & Quire

“Its untarnished eloquence smites the reader on a level of intimate innocence so beautiful that at times it leaves the reader breathless ..." — Literary Review of Canada

McNally Robinson will be on site with books for sale.
