The Wisdom of Wormwood
And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah.” (Exodus 15:23)

There’s an old saying that declares, “Timing is everything.” Though not completely accurate, it’s not incredibly far off. The right word spoken at the wrong time can do irreparable damage. Wisdom in its most basic form is a matter of timing; simply speaking the right word for the right person or situation at the right time.
Enter Moses and the rest of hot, thirsty, desert-traveling Israel. They come to a place called Marah, a body of water so putrid that its literal name is “bitterness.” But the name goes deeper than that. It’s connected to wormwood, the most bitter-tasting of all woods. It’s lethal in high doses, shown to cause hysteria, and is connected to death and judgement throughout Scripture. All in all, wormwood is bad news.

We know the rest of Marah’s story. Thirsts would be quenched and needs would be met. The waters of Marah would eventually be made sweet, but the key to it all was timing. If drunk early, the waters in question would cause damage.

How many times do we find ourselves where Moses and Israel stood, standing on the banks of Marah, looking at the waters of wormwood, thinking it’s everything we want, need, and desire? And the entire time, God is there, standing by our side, saying, “Stop. Be patient. Yes, you’ll eventually drink of the river. You’re in the right place, but it isn’t time yet. Some other things have to happen first.” It's encouraging and frustrating all at the same time.

Whether it’s revival, a ministry, a job, a dream, a relationship, or a goal, timing coupled with trust in God's timeline for our lives is the key. Wherever we may be in the process, instead of rushing God’s timetable, our job is to learn to navigate the in-between, remain faithful in our tasks and consistent in our service, all the while keeping our ears open for the command from the Father that says, "Go! It's time!" Those three words make all of the difference between wormwood and wonder.

Important Information

We recently wrapped up our Section One Conference. First, I want to thank our sectional leadership for your vote of confidence and your continued support of the young people and youth ministries of our section and district. It's been an honor to represent our section on the GDYD Committee for the past two years and I'm looking forward to what the next two years will bring. If you were not able to attend the sectional conference or would like a record of the numbers and goals presented, please click here to read the two-year report for Section One Youth.

Saturday, March 4, 2017 will mark our third annual Section One Youth Leadership Summit. View the Facebook Event Page Here. This event will focus on honoring our youth workers, allowing them time to be refreshed, renewed, and equipped with new tools and ideas for their various ministries. It’s also a time for us to come together, to fellowship, to compare notes, and to enjoy some solid, biblical teaching on topics surrounding youth leadership and leadership in general. There will be back-to-back teaching sessions with giveaways scattered in-between. Lunch and childcare will also be provided.  For meal preparation and childcare coordination purposes, please RSVP by Wednesday, Feb. 22. There is no cost for the event.

One session we are particularly excited about is a guided discussion called "The Millennial Paradox," the focus of which will be gaining insight into the minds and mindsets of those born after 1984 and how we can apply those concepts to reaching Generations Y & Z.

These summits have been a great success and we're excited to see what 2017's summit has in store. To access audio files and handouts from previous years, please visit bit.ly/S1YouthSummit2016

PLEASE NOTE: At the request of several of our local leaders, we are locking in this event for the first Saturday in March every year. I sincerely hope this clarification will assist in your multi-year planning.

The Section One Circuit is an initiative to foster communication and collaboration within our section. The premise is simple. My wife and I intend to visit each church on a youth night or in a regular service, at least twice per year. This plan includes all of our churches, even those that may not yet have a youth group.

We want to show you our support and be a help to you in any way we can. We can come to help serve, to speak, or to simply be worshipful bodies in your assembly, whatever will be the greatest benefit to you.

I'll be reaching out to each pastor to coordinate this effort. Please let me know your youth service / event schedules so we can plan accordingly.
