Bio-Link Online News March 2017

Welcome to the March 2017 edition of Bio-Link Community news!

Sometimes I can image how this pelican must feel. There're so many choices, it's hard to know where to start.  Spring is an action packed time in the Bio-Link community.  We've been contacting many of you to update your program information, planning for new projects, and scheduling lots of exciting events.  Look for our program survey at the end of the month.  We share this information back in the form of a report and we use it for guidance to help understand where biotechnology education is heading and where we can be of help.

Ignite talks at the Summer Fellows Forum.
Every year we try something new at Summer Fellows.  Sometimes we have posters, sometimes it's movies.  This year, we're going to devote Tuesday night to Ignite-style talks on ideas for Bio-Link's next phase.  Ignite talks are very short and very exciting, and we have a video to show us how it's done:

http://scottberkun.com/2009/how-to-give-a-great-ignite-talk/

The theme for these talks is "what would you do to make Bio-Link (or parts of Bio-Link) sustainable?"  We're looking for your best entrepreneurial pitch and hoping to interesting conversations and grant discussions during the rest of the week.  A sign up form will be posted in the Summer Fellows Event page soon, where you can sign up.

Lots and lots of events!
At the end of March, we're presenting a webinar on 3rd party certification and entry level certificates.  Three workshops are scheduled for the first week of April:  the 13th Annual Bio-Science Conference in Worthington, Minnesota;  CSO Summit 2.0, and a grant writing workshop.  The CSO Summit explores the efforts at two year colleges to set up incubators and help catalyze their local industry.  If your college is interested in incubators and contract services, be sure to check out this workshop in Austin, TX.  If you're thinking about writing an ATE grant, Dr. V. Celeste Carter will be leading a grant writing workshop on the morning of April 7th, also in Austin, TX.  If your students are involved in undergraduate research, or you want to learn more about ways to include research in your courses, look into the AC2 Bio-Link Research Mentoring Workshop at Del Mar College at the end of April.

For some people summer means a vacation, for Bio-Link, summer means Summer Fellows, Winston-Salem, and Stem cells!  The fellowship application for Summer Fellows is on-line now.  If you're new to Bio-Link or it's been awhile since you've had a fellowship to attend, be sure to apply.  New Bio-Link members are given first priority.  In Winston-Salem, you can learn more about industry first-hand through Forsyth College's Bioscience Industry Fellows Program.

And three summer workshops (Madison and San Francisco) give you the chance to learn about stem cell technology and get hands on experience learning how to work with stem cells in your course.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at one or more events.

Bio-Link Webinar:  3rd Party Certification

Third-party certification exams provide a mechanism where students can demonstrate proficiency and readiness to enter the workforce.  Industry-validated certificates are particularly appealing since the industry review process ensures that the exams cover skills and knowledge that align with industry needs. Bio-Link's webinar panel will discuss the Biotechnicians Assistant Credential Exam (BACE), a certification exam developed by Biotility at the University of Florida's Center of Excellence for Regenerative Health Biotechnology.

The webinar will take place on March 31st, 1:00pm to 2:30pm EDT. Registration is now open.

Worthington Bio Conference

The Worthington Regional Bio-Science Conference is a great opportunity to connect with Animal and Plant based bioscience practitioners in the Tri State region of South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota. What evolves out of one area of biotech often times has implications in other areas of importance to overall quality of life. The conference is open to anyone involved in or interested in the bioscience industry, including students.

The conference will be held April 6th and 7th--for more information download the conference brochure.

NSF Grant Writing Workshop

Dr. V. Celeste Carter is the Program Director for the Division of Undergraduate Education (DUE) at the National Science Foundation (NSF). This workshop provides opportunities to learn about grant programs of interest, hear from current Principal Investigators on tips and strategies, and participate in a mock review panel.
By the end of the program, participants will:
  • Become familiar with NSF programs
  • Learn strategies for developing a robust proposal
  • Gain an understanding of the merit review process used by the NSF
The workshop will be held on April 7th from 8:00 to 11:30 at Austin Community College Highland Campus.

Additional workshop details and registration information are available.

2017 CSO Summit  April 7th & 8th

The CSO Summit 2.0 in Austin TX will provide an opportunity for attendees to learn about new approaches to providing student work experiences, whether inside or outside the college. Discussion topics will include:
  • Balancing industry requirements with educational needs
  • Intellectual property
  • Avoiding competition
  • QA/QC
  • Legal contractual agreements
  • Measuring impact
  • Sustainability

Information about scholarships and registration can be found on the Bio-Link website. Also on the website is the Bio-Link CXO Summit Report 2012 and a recording of the January CSO webinar (with accompanying documents) hosted by Bio-Link.

Registration is now open for AC2 Bio-Link Research Mentoring Workshop

The AC2 Bio-Link Research Mentoring Workshop will highlight strategies to embed research into class experiences within AC2 partner institutions and to foster a national mentoring network for broader implementation of undergraduate research. A benefit of research mentoring is that it enables two-year students to successfully compete with students from four-year schools at regional and national meetings.

The conference will be held at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas on April 21st-22nd.

Summer Fellows application window is open--we hope to see you there!

It is close to the vernal equinox but the Bio-Link community is already into summer--well Summer Fellows anyway.  It is time to apply for the Bio-Link National Summer Fellows Forum--the workshop proposal deadline is April 1st and the fellowship application deadline is April 3rd so don't be late! The Bio-Link National Summer Fellows Forum will take place from June 5th to June 9th and promises to be a terrific chance to learn about the latest practices in biotechnology education. Further details and event documents are available on the Bio-Link event page.

NSF ATE Stem Cell Teacher Academies

The faculty and staff of Madison College and City of San Francisco are pleased to announce this exciting summer professional development opportunity designed for high-school and two-year college science and technical education instructors. The same course will be taught three times, at two different locations in an effort to make it available to as many instructors as possible.  The Academy will be taught by a team of nationally recognized biotechnology educators led by Dr. Thomas Tubon and Dr. Robert DelVecchio.
The Academy will cover:
  • Aseptic techniques
  • Routine maintenance and culturing of stem cells
  • Mouse models of stem cell differentiation
  • Light and epifluorescence microscopy
