It's Official

Schmidt Named Fair Manager

2017 is off to an excellent start for the Fort Bend County Fair. Cindy Schmidt has been named the Fair Manager. The familiar face and long time supporter of the Fair had held the Interim Fair Manager position for several months before being officially offered the top job. In 2016, Cindy as Interim Fair Manager oversaw all Fair events including the Boots & Buckles on The Bay Fishing Tournament, Downtown Stomp, Fort Bend County Fair Night at the Skeeters' game, and managed the daily operations of the Fair’s 10-run. “Cindy is a natural fit to our association. She has repeatedly proven her dedication and focus to getting our Fair to the next level, as a board we could not ask for a better person to help us achieve our goals” said Ernest Lawson, 2017 Fort Bend County Fair President. “Cindy knows the importance of our traditions, but has an incredible foresight to support the youth.”

Cindy and her husband Darren are both familiar faces to the Fair. “Darren and I both grew up in Fort Bend County and are proud to give back to the community we’ve been a part of most all our lives.  We truly believe in the Fair’s mission statement… Benefiting Youth, Promoting Agriculture, and Supporting Education,” says Schmidt.  The couple enjoys seeing all the kids they have helped over the years come back with their kids that are now participating in the Fair.

In 1990, Darren encouraged his wife to join the Livestock Committee. Cindy found herself working with the commercial heifers and residue avoidance. As a volunteer, she continued to grow and became part of the Fair Club Committee, Hospitality Committee, and Decorations Committee. Cindy and a few other volunteers created the Freezer Sale as a way to help the kids who did not make the Jr Livestock Auction.  In 1996, Cindy became a Life Member, and in 2008 she officially joined the Fair staff as secretary. “I have loved my time here ever since,” said Schmidt. It is easy to say that Cindy brings a well-rounded wealth of knowledge to the Fair Manager’s position.

Cindy has countless memories of attending the Fair and shares, “Some of my most favorite memories - were sitting on the curb on Morton Street in downtown Richmond watching the parade with my Grandma. Then that night my Dad would load up the station wagon and drive us to the fairgrounds to watch the fireworks show.  Family and Fair…does not get any better!”  Cindy’s duties as Fair Manager will range from Entertainment contracts to putting out fires, from Livestock shows to Rodeo preparations; she will be leading the charge and making many new memories.

Join us in tipping our hat and sending well-deserved congratulations to Cindy! See you at the Fair!

Fort Bend County Recognized

Top Honor for Gutierrez

The Fort Bend County Fair may be several months away, but they are already making the news. Board member and all-around great man, Sean Gutierrez, has been named 2017 Texas Association of Fair and Events "Volunteer of the Year". The immense honor recognizes all of the fairs, rodeos, and events held around the state including the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, The State Fair of Texas, and the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. Sean earned the honor for his hard work, dedication, and complete selflessness when it comes to work to put into the Fort Bend County Fair. Long before the fair starts, Sean is onsite getting the fairgrounds transformed into the family fun event we all know. From livestock pens being set up to hanging sponsor banners, Sean is a force to get things done.

Despite having the demanding job of being a Sugar Land Fireman, Sean has been volunteering at the fair for the past 25 years. He saves his vacation time to be able to fully commit his muscle, skills, and sweat to the fair’s 10-day run. Behind the scenes there is not an event that Sean has not been a part of - taking tickets at the door for the Crawfish Boil, announcing duties at the Fishing Tournament, helping with the scale at the Steer Tag In, bringing tables to the Queen’s coronation, or providing the ice and water for the Exceptional Rodeo, he is there. Often, events go off without a glitch because of the giant shoulders of Sean, allowing others to shine because he carries the weight. From opening day to close, Sean is the go-to person for all our set up, clean up and safety needs.

Sean was elected to the Fort Bend County Fair Board of Directors in 2011 where he was asked to oversee the Safety Committee, Clean Up and Set Up. He has served as a volunteer, a committee member, and as a chairman. Currently, he sits in the secretary position on the executive committee of the board of directors.

Despite, all this work, you will always find Sean with a smile. His good humor and can-do attitude are infectious, and he is always a problem solver and never the problem.

He has been married to his beautiful wife Barbara for 28 years, and they have two children – Lauren, William, and Daughter-in-Law, Brandi. Sean and Barbara have also been blessed with four grandchildren – Ty, Winter, Max and River.

Bravo Sean! Your fair family could not be more proud! Be sure to mark your calendar for this year’s fair running from September 29 to October 8, 2017.

Go Tejano Committee Sponsors Dance

7th Annual Valentine's Dance

Catch the Fever with La Fiebre! The Grammy nominated band sat down with the Fort Bend County Fair to give us a full scoop on what we can expect at next month’s dance.

Q & A:
Q. La Fiebre is coming to the Fort Bend County Fair Go Tejano dance on Saturday, February 13th, what can your fans expect?

A. What can our fans expect? Fans can expect a taste of the past, present and future. They will hear the same hard driven upbeat Tejano sound that Fiebre is famous for. Great Musicianship, and a surprise or two.

Q. The band has been around for several decades with much success…what do you credit your longevity to?

A. As with all bands that have been around as long as Fiebre has, musicians come and go. We are proud to say that the core of the band hasn't changed and the guys that will perform on your stage February 11th are the best Fiebre has had at any one time. They will reproduce on stage what you hear on a CD.

Q. The band has a self describe powerhouse Tejano sound – through the years how have you changed?

A. . Fiebre started as a rock band, Tejano became an opportunity to make money so they formed La Fiebre. Music like everything evolves, So they evolved as well. The horn driven Rancheras are still the songs most want to hear. The Accordion now is incorporated in most of the songs played. So you will hear the Classic Tejano and Conjunto sounds as well as Rock influences in the songs they play. Fiebre has a nickname "Monsters of Tejano Rock"

Q. Your fans represent different generations – from young to veteran fans – what draws such a wide range of a fan base?

A. The fact that we play our classic hit songs as well as our newer hits - allows us to draw fans of all ages. La Fiebres' biggest hit to date "Borracho De Besos" released in 1993 is still one of the most requested songs on Tejano radio across the Country.

Q. What’s next for La Fiebre…seems like there is no slowing down?

A. La Fiebre will finish the month of January in the studio working on a new project. The new CD will have The traditional Fiebre sound along with some songs with a twist. it will be great but I guess you will have to get a CD and judge for yourself. As far as stop playing? Fiebre will play as long as God is willing and as long as the fans keep buying their material and keep coming to see to see them perform.
