Delirium could accelerate dementia-related mental decline
When hospitalised, people can become acutely confused and disorientated. This condition, known as delirium, affects a quarter of older patients and new research by UCL and University of Cambridge shows it may have long-lasting consequences, including accelerating the dementia process.

The study, published today in the journal JAMA Psychiatry, is the first to show the multiplying effects of delirium and dementia in these patients.

Episodes of delirium in people who are not known to have dementia, might also reveal dementia at its earliest stages, the research found.

Supporting actors take lead role as our brains age
The main changes in our brains as we get older are in the brain cells with a supporting role, called glial cells, British scientists have found.

The surprising finding in a study by researchers at UCL and the Francis Crick Institute is published in the journal Cell Reports.

The researchers also found that the greatest changes in glial cells as we age are in the brain regions most often damaged by neurodegenerative disease, like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

New model predicts when people are willing to try new things
A new model to predict when people are most likely to try different products has been developed by scientists at UCL and dunnhumby, a customer science company.

The research, published in the inaugural issue of Nature Human Behaviour, could help to direct public health interventions aimed at encouraging healthier choices.

The team analysed anonymous purchase data from over 280,000 shoppers who regularly bought products in six categories: beers, breads, coffees, toilet papers, washing detergents and yogurts. Individual shoppers were represented only by anonymous data-set numbers with no personal or identifiable information.

Time: 16:00 - 17:00

Dr Neil Marlow, Professor of Neonatal Medicine, UCL EGA Institute for Women’s Health Abstract: Extreme prematurity has been one of the success stories of medicine over the past 25 years, understanding the altered physiology and pathology that attends birth at extremely low gestations has led to immense strides in survival. The neuropsychiatric consequences of this are now becoming apparent and there is an explosion of work understanding the core deficits that produce these outcomes is now a priority if we are to identify potential therapeutic strategies. The first of the two EPICure studies has been following individuals born in 1995 before 26 weeks of gestation. This was a group who have demonstrated significant psychometric and psychiatric morbidity. The research team have just completed an evaluation of a sample at 19 years of age to introduce recent studies that have started to define the adult outcomes for this group.
