January 2017!

Celebrating our 25th year!

2017 is an exciting year for us as we are celebrating 25 years! We have a new logo to mark the occasion, plus celebrations in the pipeline later in the year! Watch this space to find out more.

We are also delighted to welcome Victoria Nicol as the new Chair of our Board of Directors, and here is a new year message from her:

"Happy New Year to all our members, suppliers and customers. I am delighted to have taken on the role of Chair of Merton Chamber of Commerce, in this, our 25th anniversary year. Having been a Director for a couple of years, I know I have some big boots to fill following the sudden death of our long serving Chair, Andrew Wakefield. I am keen to build on Andrew's great legacy and have a passion to drive forward the exciting new strategy that we launched last summer. My aim is to consolidate on this strategy by bringing you key benefits for your business growth – a new approach to membership, a new business growth service and support in building your contacts and networking through our events and workshops. I know these strategies work as a small business owner myself – read my more detailed blog and I look forward to meeting you in the months ahead."

2016 ended with our most successful Christmas lunch, raising £860 in aid of The Paul Strank Charitable Trust.

Thank you to all who donated prizes and attended on the day, it was once again, a Christmas lunch to remember!

Did you know that Merton Council is proposing to introduce a surcharge on all diesel vehicles with a business permit?

The council’s research has found that diesel vehicles in Merton contribute disproportionately to local air quality emissions. This was based on real-life on-road emissions rather than the manufacturers’ specification.

Full details of the proposals are available here. Have your say till 3rd February when the statutory consultation closes.

Council to consult with businesses on business plan

Merton Council is to meet with businesses to ask them about their views on the council’s budget and business plan proposals.

Leader of the Council, Councillor Stephen Alambritis will be in the Civic Centre’s Council Chamber on 7 February, 6pm – 7pm along with council officers and cabinet members to answer any questions and address concerns business owners may have about the proposals for 2017/18 and the business plan 2017-21. Neighbourhood fund consultation – still time to take part!

Merton Council is calling on people living and working in Merton to choose their priorities on how a share of just over £500,000 could improve their community.

They are asking you to have your say by completing the short survey that is found at the following link: www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/Mertonfund

The funding is 15% of Merton Community Infrastructure Levy income that is available for neighbourhood projects. The results of the survey will help inform the priorities for allocating this funding. For more information visit: www.merton.gov.uk/CIL

The Orchard Day Nursery
Premier Member fast-track success story

Ambitious entrepreneur, Sam Green, approached us in June 2016 just after he had secured £0.5m of private investment and acquired 4800 sq ft of office space in Wimbledon town centre to set up the first of three new childcare centres – the Orchard Day Nursery. The ex Allied Irish Bank building had been vacant for a number of years and was in need of a complete refurbishment before the Nursery could be opened in the September of the same year, not to mention a change of business use application and OFSTED approval!

Sam needed someone to help him quickly navigate his way around the borough and make introductions to key local stakeholders and potential partners.

Within 3 months of being introduced to Kevan Dunne at the Chamber, Sam had met the Leader of the Council, the Chief Executives of Merton Chamber of Commerce and Love Wimbledon, a host of neighbours, including the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, Polka Theatre, Metro Bank and Deen City Farm and received extensive support with his successful planning application.

As planned, The Orchard Nursery was formally opened in September 2016 by the Leader of the Council, Stephen Alambritis, and now employs 12 people and is providing childcare for 40 children. By September 2017 they will have doubled the number of staff and children at The Orchard Day Nursery and be well on their way to opening their next nursery.

The Orchard Nursery were one of the first Premier members of the Chamber and are reaping the rewards of our connectivity in the borough.

“The Chamber has made us feel so welcome in the Borough. We have been staggered by the extent of their knowledge and support and their help was invaluable in getting our first nursery opened within our extremely tight timescale.” Sam Green, Managing Director of South London Day Nurseries Ltd

Healthier Workplaces Improve Performance

If you’ve got an office full of staff trying to stick to New Year resolutions, there’s an easy way to help: become a healthy workplace employer! Support your team’s good intentions by:

ENCOURAGING everyone to eat healthier by providing a workplace fruit bowl – and re-filling it twice a week

INCREASING activity levels by turning one-to-ones into walking meetings - you’ll find fresh air and exercise increase both inspiration and efficiency

DITCHING the snack habit during meetings – there’s no need to munch biscuits or pastries while you plan, and the sit-nibble combo is a killer for weight gain

CHALLENGE everyone to increase their daily step count by 10% for the next week (then extend it to a fortnight, month etc). Downloading a free app like mapmyrun will help them keep count. Team-on-team competition or an office league-table might help motivation too.
