What do recruits look for when hiring new graduates from CAL?
We really do look for a well-rounded, total package person. Meaning, your technical (i.e. accounting) expertise and interest is at the foundation, but that candidates should also bring a passion for solving problems, innovation, work quality, leadership, and connecting with people. Communication doesn't need to be perfect, but the desire to connect with colleagues and clients is important in our work.  We also want new graduates to be themselves - authenticity is important and valued.

What are the benefits of starting a career in public accounting?
Public accounting is an incredible foundation and career launching point that can really take you anywhere and is so highly regarded by companies in all industries and locations.  You learn technical, relationship management, leadership, and other soft skills you might not have ever imagined - that will be helpful throughout your lifetime.  Also, in a public accounting firm you get to experience a variety of client problems and companies, whereas if you started at just one company, you get a siloed and limited perspective.
