Things to come:
Music for a
liens, phantoms and vampires

Fantasy, horror and outer space adventures are arguably the most inspiring topics for film music composers. Jerry Goldsmith often takes aliens and monstrous creatures (ALIEN, STAR TREK) as the siren and the muse that influence some of the boldest bars ever written for films. The effect of flying objects in John Williams's musical imagination is, of course, beyond discussion (STAR WARS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND).

We start this new year with inventive and refreshing sounds composed for modern science fiction classics (THE MATRIX, ALIENS, GATTACA) and also for two pillars of the horror genre: NOSFERATU (1922) and THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (1925). Max Schreck's impersonation of Count Orlok and Lon Chaney's unforgettable performance as the Phantom boast deeper with the overtly theatrical and brilliant scores that you can hear in our upcoming films concerts. Throughout Carl Davis's outstanding creation for THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA you will recognize reminiscences of Charles Gounod's FAUST (1859) that draw connections between the Phantom and Mephistopheles and add redeeming qualities to a character that could be just reduced to pure horror. The music becomes the character, and we hope that you can enjoy such magic in any of our upcoming shows.

THE MANY VOICES OF NOSFERATU

Did you know that F. W. Murnau's classic has inspired Aaron Copland's ballet GROGH (1925) and dozens of music compositions? Murnau regarded his film as "A Symphony of Horror", and so did musicians such as Hans Erdmann, Bernd Wilden, Pierre Oser, Michael Obst and James Bernard (Hammer Films's inhouse composer) who took it as a privileged canvas to create some of their most compelling scores - all of them available through our FilmPhilharmonic Edition. This season we invite you to discover Hans Erdmann's original 1922 score - full of Sturm und Drang pathos - and Bernd Wilden's modern yet romantic composition (2004).
