Emergency Preparedness is Everyone's Responsibility

Thanks for subscribing to our Prepared Dawgs newsletter! We look forward to sharing emergency tips and resources to help you be better prepared for emergencies. Here are a few of our recent tips to get you started.

Severe Weather Awareness Week

February 6 - 10, 2017

"Southern Severe Weather Outbreak Spawns 31 Tornadoes, Kills 6 on Second Day of 2017." National Weather Service. January 5, 2017.

Are you prepared for severe weather? As you can see, severe weather can occur anytime of the year in Georgia. Each year, UGA's Office of Emergency Preparedness, in collaboration with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency/Homeland Security and the National Weather Service, looks to educate Faculty, Staff, and Students about the threats from severe weather during Severe Weather Preparedness Week (Feb. 6-10).

Statewide Tornado Drill
The most important events during the Severe Weather Awareness Week are the test of the UGA Emergency Notification System including UGAAlert and the statewide tornado sirens. These drills are scheduled for Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at 9:00 a.m.

How to Participate
We encourage all UGA Faculty, Staff, and Students to proceed to the nearest severe weather shelter during the five minute drill. If you are unable to move to your location, please discuss what you would do in an actually event with those around you. Note, an all clear message will not be sent out after the drill has been completed. If you have any questions, please email our office.

Why have a Week Dedicated to Severe Weather?
According to the National Weather Service, Georgia had over $33 million worth of damages costs because of hazardous weather in 2015 alone. The United States had 176 fatalities related to flooding that same year. On January 2, 2017, southwest Georgia was hit by eight tornadoes.

During Severe Weather Awareness Week, please review your own emergency procedures to be prepare for weather-related hazards.

Prior to the test, check your contact information in the UGAAlert system at www.ugaalert.uga.edu to make sure that you will receive alerts
via your preferred methods (text, email, phone, etc.)

This year, OEP welcomed our first class of student Ambassadors.  The Prepared Dawgs Ambassadors is a select group of students chosen to promote, organize, and participate in campus emergency preparedness activities and act as student liaisons for the Office of Emergency Preparedness.  The Ambassadors meet monthly to learn about various aspects of emergency preparedness and receive short talking points that they can share with their friends, classmates, and student organizations they are involved with.
This year’s Ambassadors assisted with OEP’s National Preparedness Month event at Tate Plaza and promoted the Fall Academic Professional Security Series Lecture.  They also shared emergency preparedness information with participants during Parking Services Operation Safe Drive in November.  They have provided our office with many opportunities to share preparedness information with student groups on campus that we normally would not be able to reach.
Applications for the 2017-2018 Prepared Dawgs Ambassador program will open March 1, 2017 and conclude March 31, 2017.  If you know of a student who is interested in serving as an OEP Ambassador, they can watch our website for the application or contact Noelle Broadnax, broadnax@uga.edu, for more information.
