Andreas Weigend, "Data for the People: How to Make Our Post-Privacy Economy Work for You"
Abstract: Every time we Google something, Facebook someone, Uber somewhere, or even just turn on a light, we create data that institutions collect and refine to make decisions. And whether it is a bank deciding on a loan or an employer evaluating a candidate, there is a chance that big data can be used against us rather than for us.

In DATA FOR THE PEOPLE: How to Make Our Post-Privacy Economy Work for You (Basic Books, Hardcover, January 31, 2017), Andreas Weigend, one of the world’s foremost experts on big data, social-mobile technologies, and consumer behavior challenges current views about the risk and rewards of the data we create. Rather than perpetuating a romanticized view of privacy he demands increasing transparency and agency, and shows readers how to claim the gains from their data.

There already are more connected devices than people on earth. The exponential increase in data is driving economic growth and making life more convenient, but how much we benefit from our data depends on how closely the interests of data-collecting institutions align with our own. Too often, outdated standards of privacy and control force us into unfair contracts with data companies, but it doesn’t have to be this way. Weigend argues that individuals need to become “data literate” and demand rights to their data, in order to be empowered in our post-privacy age. Drawing on his work with firms in retail, travel, finance, and healthcare, he proposes a set of data rights that will enable individuals to make better decisions about how our daily data are refined, bartered, and sold.

Biography: Andreas Weigend is an expert on the future of big data, trends in consumer behavior, and social-mobile technologies, the combination of which he calls the social data revolution. He is the former chief scientist of Amazon, where he helped create a culture of data, experimentation, and innovation. He currently teaches at the University of California–Berkeley and at Fudan in Shanghai. He is the founder and director of the Social Data Lab. Clients include Hyatt, Alibaba, MasterCard, and Lufthansa. He received his PhD in physics from Stanford and lives in San Francisco, Shanghai, and on weigend.com
