This Weekend...
The Miracle Worker

“The Miracle Worker is about finding light in the darkness. For Helen it is the discovery of her intelligence, her humanity, and her voice; for Anne it is the discovery of hope and love for another person once more. It is a beautiful message that, no matter background or circumstances, you can connect to and be touched by.”
Maia Magerle ‘17
“Annie Sullivan”

“This show is about giving power to the powerless. Anne takes her hardships, and turns them into a jumping off point for her teaching career. And during that career, she imparts a world of knowledge into the head of someone who truly seeks it. They empower each other to grow and change.  It is a privilege to be part of this incredibly moving and true story.”
Anabelle Nietupski ‘17
“Helen Keller”

Because of the true life subject matter, which includes some violence, the show may not be suitable for very young children.  Parents should use their discretion.

This year’s theme is the Kentucky Derby, so, ladies, get your hats ready and, gentlemen, you might want to select a bow tie.  The evening promises to be great fun and there will even be a live band!

We are very excited to announce our 2017 awardees for this year.  The Alumni Board of Governors has selected Major David Matteson, M.D., M.S. ’01 for the Distinguished Alumni Award for Career and Judy Zimmerman Rosatti ’80 for the Distinguished Alumni Award for Service.  The Mercy Award will be bestowed to Dr. Jamie Borowicz, and Tom Guelcher will receive the status of Honorary Alumnus.

MPS will honor Louise Hufstader Courtelis ‘50 and Kiki Courtelis with the prestigious Laker Legend Philanthropy Award.

Upcoming Campus Ministry Activities

February 10-12:  Divine Mercy Encounter #85 is being held at St. Joseph/Bread of Life parish here in Erie. Students in grades 10-12 are eligible. This is the best local retreat for students who want to know Christ better or who want to meet him for the first time. Many current and former MPS students and faculty members have been involved with DME through the years. It’s a powerful and poignant retreat experience. And for DME 85, Campus Ministry is offering to pay the $45 fee for any participating MPS students. See Mrs. Tatar or Fr. Steve for more information.

Monday, February 13:  Please join other MPS students and families for MPS Family Adoration in the chapel at 7:00 pm. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will feature praise music and a time for silent prayer too. Our last MPS Family Prayer Night was standing room only and we hope to see many of you for this night as well.

Saturday, March 18:  24 Hours for the Lord is a worldwide initiative called for by Pope Francis to invite people to receive the mercy of God through Eucharistic Adoration and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. St. Peter Cathedral in Erie is joining other cathedrals in the United States and abroad in providing 24 hours of adoration and confessions. Mercyhurst Prep is “hosting” the hour from 10:00-11:00 am on Saturday, March 18. We are asking MPS families to simply go to the cathedral and join in the prayer and the sacrament. Please email Fr. Steve at sschreiber@mpslakers.com to register your family.

March 24 – March 26: The annual MPS Boys Weekend will be held this year at the newly renovated Hope House retreat center in Union City. MPS boys will join Mrs. Tatar, Fr. Steve and top-notch guest presenters for a weekend of prayer (including several hours of silent prayer), fellowship, food, and fun. Space is limited, and last fall’s MPS Girls Weekend quickly sold out, so we recommend that interested boys register with Mrs. Tatar as soon as possible.
