Nungalinya eNews - February 2017

Property Improvements

Dear <<First Name>>

Due to our large number of students last year we received more government funding than expected and  were able to use it to do some much needed upgrades to our accommodation. The funding had to be used up or returned, so we had a very busy time at the end of the year completing the upgrade to the hostel bathrooms, getting paths to our units so the cleaners can more easily access them, ordering furniture for rooms, updating equipment in the kitchen etc.

Sadly however, we have been notified that our application for funding for a new hostel was unsuccessful. This continues to be an issue for the College as we struggle to fit all the students into our current accommodation facilities. However, we will continue to seek ways to further develop the accommodation.

Thank you to those who contributed financially to the College in 2016. We achieved our donations budget and actually finished the year with a small surplus. This was due to increased student numbers and the reduction in the employment budget as we did not have a Development Officer for the year.

The year ahead is looking good so far although we are anticipating less students than 2016. One reason for this is that so many are completing and graduating meaning they have finished the offerings available to them. This is great!

Please pray for a new generation of Christian leaders in communities to grow in faith and come to study at Nungalinya.

Prayer Points

If you are short on time:

  • Pray for Mandy and Justine in their new roles as trainee teachers and for Justine's children as they settle into school in Darwin.
  • Pray for the right students to come and study at Nungalinya in 2017 and that we will have sufficient numbers for all our courses.
  • Pray for Karen and Steve Fletcher as they commence their roles as Development Officer and Residential Services Manager.
If you have a bit longer:
  • Pray for the church in remote communities  - that younger people will come to faith and be discipled and grow into strong Christian leaders.
  • Pray for wisdom in how to increase our accommodation facilities
  • Pray for our Foundation Studies teachers as they teach new course material this year
Pass it on!

Welcome to Justine Gawinygawiny Gaykamangu
In our last newsletter I announced the appointment of Mandy Manggurra as a Trainee Teacher for 2017. We are doubly blessed to be able to announce that Justine Gawinygawiny Gaykamangu has also been appointed with support from the Uniting Church Northern Regional Council of Congress (NRCC). Justine has previously completed our Media Course where she received an award for her movie, Certificate III in Theology and is finishing the Certificate IV in Christian Ministry and Theology this year. Like Mandy, she will be also starting her Certificate IV in Training and Assessment as well.  It will be great to have both Mandy and Justine starting together so they can support and encourage each other. Rev Helen Richmond will  be acting as their mentor and support them in their work and studies. Justine is moving from Ramingining community to live on campus at Nungalinya with her family. Please pray for her in such a big change.
Welcome to Karen and Steve Fletcher

As we start a new year it is great to also welcome new staff. Karen and Steve Fletcher both join the Nungalinya Team. Karen is our Development Officer while Steve is our Residential Services Manager. Karen was previously Principal of Gäwa Christian School on Elcho Island supported by Steve as Operations Manager and teacher. As a result they have valuable experience living and working with Aboriginal people. We have many students come from Elcho and they are well respected by the community there. We are very fortunate to have such highly qualified committed Christian people to join the Nungalinya team.
