The University of Hawai‘i Presents Dobet Gnahoré
University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa • Orvis Auditorium
February 24, 2017 • 7:30pm
Dobet Gnahoré, Grammy-winning songstress from the Ivory Coast, will grace the Orvis Auditorium stage for just one night on February 24th. Widely considered one of contemporary African music’s most exciting talents, Gnahoré has astounded audiences with her thrilling stage presence, appealing melodies and powerful singing.
Recently nominated for “Best Traditional Female Artist of Africa” by the KORA All Africa Music Awards, Gnahoré draws from the `Bété` tradition of her father, master percussionist Boni Gnahoré. She sings in seven African languages as well as French and English and she is backed by a Pan-African band. "Defiantly diverse, musically and linguistically," Gnahoré’s songs move from delicate ballads to upbeat African grooves (BBC).
With upbeat choreography and lyrics that address a wide range of social issues from AIDS to gender equality, Dobet Gnahoré “makes everything move” (Chicago Tribune). A “riveting artist,” this award winning singer, dancer and percussionist wows audiences all over the world (Boston Globe).
