NDA's entomology program works to slow spread of emerald ash borer
Last summer, the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) confirmed the first find of emerald ash borer (EAB) in Nebraska, in Douglas County. Later, EAB was also found in Cass County, and as a result quarantines were issued for Douglas, Sarpy, Cass, Washington and Dodge counties.
NDA’s entomology program conducts survey and inspections for this pest year-round. These activities include inspections of firewood and ash nursery stock, as well as trappings at high-risk areas such as campgrounds, nurseries and rest stops. Through these activities, as well as informing impacted industries and the public of signs, symptoms, and preventative measures, NDA hopes to slow the spread of this detrimental invasive insect throughout the state.
Julie Van Meter, state entomologist and NDA Entomology Program Manager, will be holding a meeting regarding the EAB quarantine for industry workers on March, 3, 2017 from 1-4 p.m. at the Lancaster County Extension Office.
