Letter from the Directors
Dear Everest Families,

In two weeks, we will have two events that capture why it is so special to be part of Everest.

On Thursday, February 2nd at 7:00pm we will hold our first ever Community Night to Celebrate Everest’s Diverse Community. We are extremely proud of our multicultural student body. In today’s world, it is a unique privilege to be able to interact with and deeply know people with very different backgrounds and identities. This evening event is an opportunity for each community member including students, teachers, and parents, to share some of the unique identity they bring to Everest. Whether that identity includes a childhood in El Salvador, a passion for indoor soccer, an encyclopedic knowledge of pokemon characters, family heritage from Italy, or anything else, each person’s identity shapes the community we form together.

So, we want your participation! There are four ways to participate in Community Night. Please see the description below and click here to sign up to participate!

  • FOOD - We want students and parents to bring food that represent their culture. The food will be sold and the proceeds can go to an individual club or group or be donated to the school

  • IDENTITY BOOTHS - Clubs, individuals, affinity groups, and others will host “identity booths” lined along the hallways that give others a chance to learn about their identity and maybe even participate by buying some food or swag or by engaging in some other way.

  • PERFORMANCES - Everyone will come together at 8:00 to see students, parents, and faculty members share performances that represent the identity they bring to Everest.

  • VOLUNTEERING - We need some help to set up, clean up, and staff the event.

The following day, Friday February 3rd, is our Lottery Day on which we have the joy of welcoming the Class of 2021 to our community. Parent surveys tell us that our current families love being part of Everest because of our nurturing community, built from our small student body, our personalized approach, facilitated by our mentoring program and the Personalized Learning Plan, and our focus on college readiness, especially through habits of success and project based learning. This year, as in others, it is humbling to see the number of applications pouring in from 8th graders all over our district - and beyond - who want a chance to join the ranks of Snow Leopards at Everest.

Even with our track record of success as the 21st top high school in California, and with increased outreach and recruitment efforts, not everyone knows about Everest. In fact, new families still tell us that the number one way they hear about our school is through word of mouth from friends and family. So we hope that you can help us out by spreading the word to families you know would benefit from Everest’s unique education!

Here are some reminders for all families interested in applying to join Everest in 2017-2018. The deadline for all applications is Friday, January 27th at 3:00pm.

  • Submit an application on School Mint. (Even siblings must do this!)

  • Make sure to apply for the 2017-2018 school year at both Everest and Summit Prep.

  • Double-check address and contact information.

  • Contact Alma Rosas (arosas@summitps.org) with any questions.

  • Stand by your email or phone on Friday, February 3rd to hear results!

  • Attend an optional meet-and-greet on Friday, 2/3 at 3:30pm to celebrate your acceptance!

Thank you for everything you do to help us build our community and keep it strong.

Sincerely,
Chris Lewine and Drew Moriates

Message from the EPO

We have lots of exciting events coming up in the next couple of months. Please mark your calendars now and I hope to see you at one or more of these events!

Every Wednesday morning at 8:15am a group of parents meet with Chris Lewine and Drew Moriates to talk about Everest - upcoming events, what needs to be done, etc. If you would like to get more involved, please join this great group of parents to help lead this wonderful school. The staff is so small and the amount of activities and events for the students is huge, so help is always needed. The meeting is only 45 minutes long. We would love to have you join us!

Questions or comments? Please contact Linda Burt at lindamburt@gmail.com.

Everest Community Night: Celebrate Our Diverse Community
Please come out for this family friendly community building event

Students, teachers, and families are all encouraged to participate in any or all of the three aspects of our Community Night celebrating the diversity of Everest:

1) Sharing - From clubs, to passions, to different religions and heritages -- we'll have tables set up all along the halls of Everest where you can share your diversity with everyone.
2) Performances - Have something to perform? Please let us know if you would like to sing, dance, give a speech, etc....we want to celebrate everybody and can't wait to see you on the stage! (email: lindamburt@gmail.com)
3) Food - Hungry? An event like this would not be complete without food and drinks that represent all our various cultures. Bring your favorite dish to share.

“Diversity” is a concept that is emphasized in the first few words of Everest’s mission. This event is a way for us to bring together students, families, and faculty to celebrate the diversity that makes our community so special. Each member of our community brings their own identity to our school, including things that we have in common and things that make us unique. Both aspects - our similarities and our differences - are worth recognizing and celebrating.

Friday, March 3rd - First Friday Coffee
Come join us at Main & Elm Cafe. Meet other Everest parents, enjoy some conversation and coffee (and some good food!). 150 Elm Street, Redwood City
March 8th-9th - Freshman Study Trip

We need A LOT of drivers to make this trip a success. Get excited for the 9th Grade Study Trip! Similar to previous years, the 9th graders will be visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium, CSU Monterey Bay, and San Jose State University. This year the 9th graders will experience two day trips taking place on Wednesday March 8th and Thursday March 9th. This means that students will depart for Monterey on Wednesday, return to campus around 5pm, then on Thursday depart for San Jose.

In order to make this trip possible, we will need around 25 parent volunteers to drive and help chaperone. We're also looking for food donations to help with Thursday brunch. If you are interested in supporting the trip with either donated food or volunteering to drive, please reach out to Ms. McCutcheon at cmccutcheon@summitps.org.

Thank you for all your support!
March 9th-10th - Sophomore & Junior Study Trip
We need A LOT of drivers to make these trips a success. Please sign up if you can.  Signup lists will be available soon.

Everest Athletics Update
Baseball and Softball Information meeting, Wednesday, January 25th at 1 pm

Students interested in playing baseball or softball this spring, should attend this information meeting.  If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Lowe.

Get Ready for Spring Baseball and Softball!

Time to start thinking about Everest Spring Sports......we will have Boys Baseball and Girls Softball teams!  Get your physical now, as all athletes must have that done and a completed sports packet turned in before they are eligible to tryout for the Everest athletics program. Please download the updated packet off of the everest.summitps.org/community-partners/athletics.  You can also pick up a copy in the new flyer folders by the teachers lounge entrance.  Students interested in playing winter sports should turn in the packet as soon as possible!   Please contact the Everest Athletics Directors at everestphsathletics@gmail.com if you have any questions or need any help.

Have a student interested in Sports Management?

Scorekeeping is one of the few ways that students within the Everest community can get involved in sports management. This opportunity will both show colleges that a student is a viable applicant for sports management programs and acquaint a student with the logistics of the field. The scorekeeper would only need to be present for games, so that's about a 2-4 hour commitment per week.

If you think your student is interested in this exciting opportunity, please email Ms. Lowe at hlowe@summitps.org.
