Lesson 1978: Anointing at Bethany, Pt.1
John 12:1-8 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany... Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus... But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this ointment not sold for 300 denarii and given to the poor?”
He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief... having charge of the moneybag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.
Just before Matthew described Judas’ betrayal and the Last Supper, he inserted a flashback.
Matt.26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9
The feast at Bethany was just before the Passover. Martha served. Luke 10:40
The woman with perfume was Mary. This sister of Martha & Lazarus is named only 3 times in the Gospels: Luke 10:39; John 11:32, 12:3
Each time, Mary is at the feet of Jesus.
Churches should resemble their home. They had the 3 essentials needed for a growing church:
- witnessing new life in Christ (Lazarus)
- worship / adoration (Mary)
- and service (Martha).
