In his artistic practice Bart Van Dijck is moving in the midfield between cultural history and anthropology on the one hand, and visual arts on the other. He employs any kind of medium to manifest the fruits of his research on these subjects: performance, video art, sculptures, drawings - often several techniques combined into one installation. He documents the universal human identity in all its facets. Van Dijck focuses on subcultures that appear within groups of young people in the form of fascinating hybrid mixtures of folklore and contemporary, usually Western symbols. What makes Van Dijck tick are exactly those invisible memes, the cultural genes that connect people with one another in the collective unconscious.

In the transition from the year 2016 to 2017 Van Dijck travelled to Romania in search of the dancing bears. The experiences he gained, took shape in the objects and actions that he brought together for "Waking up the bear’. Nature glowingly starts to appear as fertile, moist moss on the tree trunk. A set of masks is watching; they are, along with the visitor of the exhibition, witnessing the collective event that is taking place. Van Dijck recorded the confrontations and encounters with passers-by in Romania in a travel diary, which plays an important role in the exhibition. Thanks to these writing, the spectators can mentally join the artist in his quest. The bearskin that he manufactured from the fur of another animal naturally refers to the bear, but it holds not merely an artistic value. As is also the case with the dancing bear, the skin for Van Dijck is also a utensil or a ritual object. The winter fire he ignites pays homage to the symbolic passing of the seasons.

Bart Van Dijck invites his audience to step into his ritual, and to take part of it - both 'then' and 'now'. The liberating platform of visual arts gives him the freedom to open up his research into traditions and folklore towards adaptation and transformation, and thus also to develop his very own language. In times when the world seems to be raging at a breakneck pace, this flash of infinity - the compression of past, present and future - seems to offer solace.

28.12.16  “ A bit further, I come across a man. He’s called Mircea. I estimate he’s somewhere in his 50s. He asks if I’ve got some money so that he can catch the train to Moinesti where five hungry children wait on him. I ask him if he wants to make a drawing of a bear for me. He goes about it with great focus and names everything he draws: first the body, then the paws, claws, tail and eyes. I pay him for his drawing. He embraces me and walks on cheerfully. ”

30.12.16  “ The bears dance with their paws in the air to the rhythm of the upbeat drums. Big red tassels hang from their necks. One bear is lifted above the crowd whilst dancing. There’s a smell of sulfur and fur. Some dancers seem to be in a trance. Then, all of a sudden, the drums are silent and the dance stops. Mulled wine, pretzels, nuts and cakes are handed out. The older bears drink and smoke. Skins are straightened up. ”
