Lesson 1980: Spiritual Blindness at the Triumphal Entry
In Matt.21:1-11, we see the spiritual blindness of the Jewish leaders, only days before the crucifixion.
The week began with the triumphal entry: the only time Jesus ever promoted a demonstration.
Before then, Jesus had not been a public celebrity; he cautioned people not to tell who He was.
Why did Jesus plan this demonstration?
The 1st reason: obedience to fulfill prophecy. Zec.9:9
This could only apply to Jesus; He was the only person who could prove He was Israel’s King.
He rode in on a donkey, the transportation of the Jewish royal family. 1 Kings 1:32-34
The 2nd reason for the public show: it forced the hand of Jewish leaders to finally take action.
When they saw the reaction of the crowds, they decided to destroy Jesus. John 11:53, 12:19
Prophetic Scriptures required that the Lamb of God be slain on Passover, only 4 days away.
What caused the spiritual blindness that prevented the Jews from recognizing Him as King?
Their religious leaders robbed them of the truth, substituting man-made traditions. Luke 11:52
The leaders didn’t care about God’s truth; they guarded their own interests. John 11:47-53
As they resisted truth, their blindness increased – just like the hard-hearted Pharaoh. John 12:35.
