- 'O Winter! ruler of the inverted year, . . . I crown thee king of intimate delights, Fireside enjoyments, home-born happiness, And all the comforts that the lowly roof Of undisturb'd Retirement, and the hours Of long uninterrupted evening, know.'
- - William Cowper
English poet & translator
(1731 - 1800)

- Maybe nothing is as cozy as a winter night snuggled up against the weather enjoying the feel of soft yarn and hearing the swish and click of the needles, hook or wheel as the fiber works up into something beautiful.
This is the time of year I pull out my stash and find the most jewel-like of yarns to play with - yarns with colors deep enough to warm the room. This year, I'm loving the deep reds. What colors are making their way into your projects this winter?

- Hey! Did you see these?
- I've been spending a lot of time on Ravelry this winter collecting stash busting projects and I've found some glorious ones. Here are a few of my favorites:
- Crochet Blankets: A whole collection and they are beautiful!
Nymphalidea Shawl: A knitted shawl perfect for a solid/tonal yarn and a wild and crazy one.
ZickZack Scarf: A knitted scarf that looks fabulous with all the colors!
Winter sock garland: I love this! Super fast crochet - I want one in all the colors!
Urban Survival Shawl [knitted]: I don't know what I loved more - the pattern or the colors he chose. A favorite!

Psst! - I post links like these every day on facebook. Follow my business page here to see what I find next.

What colors work with .... Reds?
Have questions about how to use several different colors in a single project?
Every month in this section I talk about great color combinations for your projects.
Red. Rose red. Blood red. Fire engine red. Red is perceptually the biggest color there is. In languages that have only three words for colors, one is always red. (The other two are 'dark' and 'light'). Some reds dilute down into pink - those are the magenta reds that lean more toward purple. Some dilute down into salmon - those are the fire engine reds that lean more toward orange.
Red is a large visual group. There really are more reds than any other color, which is why it's tough to match them exactly. I say, don't try to match them - just use more! Pair them with a variety of other colors. Here are some suggestions:
Triad [red/blue/yellow]:
Analogous [red/orange/brown]:
Monochrome [another red]:
With a neutral:
With a more varied yarn:
With another jewel tone:
Be brave! Work up a swatch and see how you like it. Whenever you have questions, feel free to contact me at one of the places below and we can talk about your project.
All featured yarns: Firefly [fingering weight, hand-dyed, superwash merino/tencel]. You can see everything I have available in my Etsy shop.
