Welcome to our new publishing tutor

Helen Heath is well known in the book trade having worked the last twenty-five years in various roles from bookselling to editing, events management and most recently publicity at Victoria University Press. She recently submitted a PhD in creative writing at the IIML and graduated from the Diploma in Publishing in 1996.

Odessa Owens, programme leader, says “I’m thrilled to have Helen join Whitireia Publishing – she brings a wealth of publishing and book trade knowledge, and is an award-winning author in her own right.”

Helen takes over from Mitch Marks who we wish well in her relocation to Auckland.

Growth spurt for The Sapling

Two graduates of Whitireia Publishing have teamed up to create a website all about children's books – and the public support is astounding!

Sarah Forster and Jane Arthur have a combined 25 years’ experience in the New Zealand book industry. Their project, The Sapling, is due to launch next month. It’s an online magazine about kids’ books with reviews, interviews, opinion pieces, essays, excerpts, comics, crafts and more. One of the important behind-the-scenes things about the site is that almost all of the content will be created in exchange for a fee – they’ll pay people for their writing and opinions.

Launched thanks to an Arts Grant from Creative NZ, The Sapling is currently partway through a Boosted crowdfunding campaign which reached its initial target in eight days. But more funding means more content and a more certain future – so donate, share the campaign and support the local children’s book ecosystem!
