Florida To Improve Road Signage

We all know how dangerous Florida roadways can be. Recent auto accidents have caused state officials and the Florida Department of Transportation to take actions to reduce accidents and to improve safety:
  • New signs will be placed before summer on the Congress Avenue / I-95 off-ramp in Boca Raton after three recent tractor trailer accidents and one death.
  • In order to prevent wrong-way crashes the Florida Department of Transportation is adding “shields” — red-and-blue highway logos with the highway direction painted in bold, white letters above them on the pavement — at 17 interchanges throughout Palm Beach County.

Prevent Summertime Drownings?

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention approximately ten people die every day from unintentional drownings and drowning is the leading cause of death of children ages 1-4. Florida leads the country in pool and spa drowning deaths for children younger than 15-years-old. With summer fast approaching, we encourage you to visit the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Pool Safely: Simple Steps to Save Lives website, a national public education campaign to reduce childhood drownings, submersion injuries and entrapments.

Pedestrian Deaths on the Rise

According to a new Governors Highway Safety Association report there has been a sharp spike in pedestrian fatalities. Pedestrian deaths nation-wide topped 6,000, the highest in more than two decades. Florida is on pace to record 600 pedestrian accidents in one year. That's the second highest rate in the country. The main causes continue to be driver distractions, DUI, J-walking, road design, weather, lack of daylight, and an increase in “green cities.”

The Future of PIP

Personal injury protection (PIP) insurance is mandatory coverage and will automatically cover up to $10,000 for related medical cost damages that you incur when you are in a car accident. That could change this legislative session as House Bill 1063 and Senate Bill 1766 are moving through the Florida state legislature, and they call for eliminating Florida's no-fault insurance plan. Under the proposal, it would end PIP but require motorists to carry a minimum bodily injury liability coverage worth $25,000 for injuries to another person, and $50,000 for injuries for two or more people.
