INSIDE CHARTERS NEWSLETTER | TENNESSEE CHARTER SCHOOL CENTER | FEBRUARY 2017
Legislative Session is Now Underway!

Governor Haslam made his seventh “State-of-the-State” address to the Tennessee General Assembly, which serves as the unofficial kickoff to the 2017 Legislative Session. Veteran and newly elected officials alike have made their way to Capitol Hill and ready to work. For the past several months, our Government Relations and Advocacy team has been meeting with charter leaders, talking to parents and communities, and developing a set of priorities to make sure ALL students have access to a high-quality education. This session, we are focusing our priorities on:

  1. Progress towards closing the facilities funding gap for charter schools.
  2. Increased transparency between authorizers and charter schools and a positive impact on the quality of authorizer practice.
  3. Consistency and clarity across authorizer best practices, actions and expectations.

Stay tuned here for future updates to stay in the loop as things unfold on the Hill!

Let's Talk Charters: NAACP Education Task Force Visited Memphis
Memphis community members, education advocates, parents and charter school leaders showed up in full force for the NAACP's Excellence in Education Hearing Session.

Earlier this month, Memphis was one of the first stops for the NAACP's newly developed Education Task Force, established to learn and study "Excellence in Education" following the organization's call for a moratorium on charter schools. Tennessee has proven to be a leading example of charter school innovation and accountability done right as presented by TCSC's CEO, Maya Bugg, during the session. Even NAACP representatives had to agree!

"When I measure what they’ve done in Tennessee and what the legislation has been, what the laws and standards have been in Tennessee, it’s better than a lot of places,” said Gloria Sweet-Love, president of the NAACP’s Tennessee State Conference.
