CampOrs Learning History
Hello everyone,
I hope you are all doing well! In the last weeks at Makor, we have been wrapping up our unit on "Jews throughout History." Our campOrs have been working hard to learn about the development of the Jewish people over time. Back in December, we started this process by learning about the "first Israelites:" Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, Leah, and Rachael.
By the end of this Sunday, we will have made it up to the modern day with a conversation about Jews in the Media - an exciting glimpse of how we might conceptualize what it means to be Jewish by viewing how Jews are represented in movies, television and literature.
Things have also been going very well outside of our "normal Makor program." On January 22nd, we had a special day of learning dedicated to Martin Luther King, Jr. and the values he fought so hard to promote. We learned about the ways that different religions--specifically Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism (and, of course, Judaism too!) -- share many core values.
The day was a great time for our campOrs to focus on seeing how Judaism so highly values peace and inter-religious collaboration. I know I loved seeing the way our campOrs studied and participated. Hopefully, they brought some of their learning and cheer home to you too. I am excited to see how our children engage with the material we have left (a country-by-country study of how Judaism looks in different parts of the world) as we enter this final stretch of our year!
Wishing you all the best,
Rabbi Ari Ballaban
