HUMANITARIAN PROJECTS IN 2017!

ContInuing Work at Home for the Aged
Macario Advantage is proud of the positive changes that were made in 2016 at the Northern District Home for the Aged in Portsmouth, Dominica. This facility provides 24/7 care for people that cannot take care of themselves and lack sufficient family support to remain at home. The Home for the Aged looks and functions so much better than it did before, both inside and outside. But there is more work that should be done.

In 2017, we are adding an interior partition that segregates the residential area of the home from the kitchen and other areas used by the staff in order to improve safety for the residents. Maintaining the old plumbing, which received major upgrades last year, continues to be a challenge. Additional work is still being discussed with the Home's Board of Directors.

Supporting Operation Youth Quake
Anyone that has dealt with abused, run-away and/or abandoned teens will appreciate the work that Operation Youth Quake is doing in Roseau, Dominica, and the challenges that they face in providing a secure home for these teens while teaching discipline that has normally been missing in their family homes. They also ensure that all of the resident youth continue their educations.
All areas of the home need major assistance, including replacing furniture and adding closet/cabinets for the residents. During 2017, Macario Advantage is focusing on the kitchen, dining, and laundry areas. Work has started on replacing the kitchen sink, on repairing the cabinets and replacing counter tops, and on relocating the stove and making other modifications to the layout of the kitchen to make it more user friendly. Work will also include repainting the entire kitchen and dining areas. The laundry room has already received a fresh coat of paint in preparation for installation of a new commercial clothes washing machine.

Kicked Off Urgent Repairs at Lamb's Feast
Lamb’s Feast is a "meals on wheels" program in Portsmouth, Dominica, that has prepared and delivered hot meals to home-bound elderly people for the past 15 years.

Last year, Macario Advantage fixed a hole in the kitchen floor and replaced rotten and termite damaged floor beams and covering with new flooring in the kitchen.  In 2017, Macario Advantage is doing similar repair work to the floor in the front room where local elderly gather for social activities.

We are also making repairs to the kitchen counters and cabinets, replacing the sink and faucet, replacing the tile countertop, and repainting  the entire area.  This makeover should keep the building functional for many more years to come.

Teaching Gardening at Primary School
In 2016, Macario Advantage gained the affection of the grade-school age children of Portsmouth, Dominica, when it prepared a new library to be opened at the Roosevelt Douglas Primary School. In 2017, we are clearing a large area of land behind the school to be transformed into a garden by students studying agriculture. Vegetable seeds and books on planting for this program were donated.

DELIVERED SHIPPED GOODS TO NEEDY RECIPIENTS

Thanks to the support Macario Advantage received from its friends and partners in the US during the summer of 2016,we were able to ship two large pallets of goods to Dominica. The shipment arrived in Dominica just before Christmas, and was cleared out of Customs in early January 2017.

The shipment included two new, commercial washing machines, one for the Home for the Aged and the other for Operation Youth Quake (local plumbers and electricians were engaged by Macario Advantage to complete their installation). Thirty folding chairs were delivered to Operation Youth Quake, and a large supply of adult diapers were delivered to the Home for the Aged. Reams of copy paper and a wide and extensive variety of school supplies were delivered to the Roosevelt Douglas Primary School in Portsmouth. New restaurant-quality pots and pans are being delivered to the Home for the Aged, to Operation Youth Quake and to Lamb's Feast.

Macario Advantage extends a special thanks to everyone that helped make the shipment a success through financial and in-kind donations.
