Hello!

Happy New Year! Welcome to the January 2017 CANSA monthly digest. In 2016 world temperatures hit a record high for the third year in a row, resulting in unprecedented heat in India and ice melt in the Arctic. CANSA and its member organisations in South Asia continue to proactively engage with their respective governments, impacted communities and key stakeholders to mitigate, adapt and survive the worst impacts of climate change. Through this monthly digest we will highlight and share the initiatives of our members so be sure to keep sending in your articles, event details and other organisational news of interest that we will be thrilled to share on our website, social media channels and other partners.

Climate Resilient Kerala – 2nd Roundtable Consultation with Key Stakeholders

In September 2016, Thanal, UNICEF and Climate Action Network South Asia, hosted ‘Climate Resilient Kerala’, a 2-day workshop in Thiruvananthapuram for policy makers, government officials, civil society organisations, scientists, academicians and media, with the objective of strengthening Kerala’s State Action Plan on Climate Change (SAPCC) and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Plans. The three main recommendations of the workshop were: a- total revision of the SAPCC with a more participatory planning process, b-integration climate action and disaster risk reduction plans across all the developmental missions of the state government and c- to prioritise the needs of women, children and the most vulnerable peoples in planning and implementation of all programs .

As a direct outcome of the workshop in November 2016, the Department of Environment and Climate Change (DoECC) announced that the Kerala SAPCC is open for revision and has invited inputs from the citizens of the state.

The second consultation in the Climate Resilient Kerala initiative, in January 2017,  in partnership with the Government of Kerala once again brought together all key stakeholders  to assess options and opportunities to integrate climate action and disaster risk reduction, particularly from the perspective of women and children in the Kerala Government’s Nava Keralam mission.

New on Our Blog
In 1971, a cyclone strikes Bagapatia, a village close to Bay of Bengal in Kendrapada district in Odisha. The residents, mostly farmers were caught unaware of its ferocity and intensity. The village was inundated by sea level rise that followed the cyclone. Most of the residents are swept away by the water current and died. Mr. Tejan Mondal saved his life by holding on to a tree branch. For next few days he and few survivors lived on tubers and wild leaves till help reached them. He and other victims lost everything that was important to them – family members, home, temple, land, their savings, land records and most importantly their identity.
