Mahar details NFF restructure at Robe regional meeting

MORE than 80 livestock producers from across the South East attended Livestock SA’s regional meeting at Robe on Friday, January 27.

National Farmers Federation president Fiona Simson was a last-minute apology due to a hip injury which prevented her from travelling. In her absence, NFF chief executive officer Tony Mahar very capably stepped up as the guest speaker and was welcomed with great interest by members.

He spoke about the current restructure being undertaken at NFF, including the transition to the new Australian Farmers platform and the desire to ensure that South Australian producers have an active role in NFF's ongoing advocacy work.

Mr Mahar also provided an insight into NFF's policy positions and recent work with regard to the backpacker tax, farmers' property rights and ongoing negotiations regarding free trade agreements.

Ms Simson sent her apologies and it is hoped her visit may be rescheduled for a meeting later this year, given her enthusiasm to engage with producers in the South East.

Southern region chairman Peter Stock welcomed members to the meeting, which enjoyed a perfect summer evening overlooking Guichen Bay at the Robe Bowling Club. Mr Stock thanked Mr Mahar for his attendance and presentation, while also gratefully acknowledging WFI for their ongoing support of Livestock SA regional meetings.

Livestock SA Geoff Power travelled from Orroroo to provide a state-wide report on the organisation's recent activities, which was complemented by a further update from Livestock SA CEO Andrew Curtis.

Regional NRM manager Tim Collins provided an update on the management of feral deer populations in the South East, which was received with great interest by attendees and prompted valuable discussion and debate on the subject.

A general policy meeting is being planned for Kingston in March, with details to be advised. Among the issues already on the agenda for that meeting are feral deer control, drains management and possible implications associated with mining on farmland for the National Vendor Declaration.
