Hello <<First Name>>,

If I haven't told you already, happy new year! I hope 2017 is off to a great start for you and yours. The semester started with a bang, there's a lot to catch up on, and we'll surely be busier still in the months to come. Let me get you up to speed...

In November of the Fall semester, we had an overdub recording session (where you have just one musician replace MIDI-programmed parts with their own live playing) with the phenomenal LA percussionist MB Gordy. The cue I scored was an action-packed clip of "The Ladybug" episode from the animated French TV series Miniscule. It was a lot of fun, and I've uploaded a version with the original sound effects as well as without.

December 10th was our last scoring session of the fall semester, and I recorded a score I wrote to a scene from the videogame BioShock. Just this past Saturday, that recording was mixed by Grammy award winning veteran recording engineer and scoring mixer Dan Blessinger (who also was the engineer on all the BioShock games)! You can hear how that came out here.

Our first forum guest of the year was esteemed choral composer and arranger Morten Lauridsen (O Magnum Mysterium, Sure On This Shining Night, O Nata Lux). He gave an inspiring monologue on the beauty of poetry, the importance of education, and his hatred for noisy, gas-powered leafblowers.

Earlier this month we had our first session of the year, our largest to date with 36 musicians, which included a number of talented Thornton music students along side a majority of professionals. I scored a scene from Hidalgo. Tune in next time to hear it!

I went to a networking event a few weekends after that session and met György Ligeti's son, Lukas, who is also a concert composer in his own right. And Theodore Shapiro, one of the guests at this event, will be scoring the upcoming Captain Underpants movie.

Last weekend, I participated in the 2017 Global Game Jam here at USC. The theme was "waves," and my team created a game in which your character is always face down on the ground and must do "the worm" to progress through the level while teaching bystanders how to dance along the way, as well as avoid getting caught by the police or hit by a car. They asked for a silly chiptune. They got a silly chiptune. You can see some screenshots of the game on the Global Game Jam website.

Finally, this Tuesday I will at last be meeting my mentor, film composer James Newton Howard (A Series of Unfortunate Events (TV Series), Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, The Hunger Games)!

Oh, and I'm back on LinkedIn after having been off it for a couple years.

Thanks for staying in touch! Until next time, stay tuned...
