Welcome to the January-February 2017 edition of the Rangelands NRM eNews. The year is already moving fast along! The rangelands has seen some significant rain in some areas of the rangelands as well, which has been very welcome. 

This issue we have news of workshops bringing stakeholders together to discuss opportunities to collaborate in both the Fitzroy Catchment of the Kimberley as well as the southern rangelands. Experts are also working with pastoralists to devise improve fire regime plans. 

Other workshops have been held about alternative grazing approaches, landscape literacy, cane toad management and tackling marine debris.

Kimberley

Fitzroy Catchment stakeholders seek optimal development 

Two workshops have recently been held to explore opportunities to optimise potential interest and investment in the Fitzroy Catchment in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. [Read more]

Broome kicks butts with new approach to marine debris 

A litter and pollution source reduction workshop was held in Broome late last year, encouraging the community to tackle litter release at its source.  [Read more]

Rangers gather to learn and practice cane toads management

Twenty people from three ranger groups took part in a Cane Toad Ranger workshop held in Fitzroy Crossing in November to gain a better understanding of the approaching pest species. [Read more]
Pilbara

Improved fire regime plan for Yarrie Station

Experts have recently visited pastoral stations in the Pilbara and Kimberley to assist with new fire planning. [Read more]
Southern Rangelands

Workshop shares alternative grazing approaches

A workshop demonstrating alternative approaches to total grazing management and feed budgeting was held in December for interested pastoralists. [Read more]

 

 

Landscape literacy improved for rangeland land managers

Land managers across the southern rangelands had the opportunity recently to increase their landscape reading skill development through a series of two-day workshops. [Read more]

Community Action Grants announced

Agriculture and Food Minister Mark Lewis has announced 118 community projects as recipients of the 2016-17 State Natural Resource Management Program Community Action Grants made possible by the Liberal National Government's Royalties for Regions. A total of $3.73 million will be distributed across the projects, supported by $6.26 million worth of funding and effort from the participating groups. There were 21 projects awarded funding in the WA rangelands. [Full list of projects]

Grants & Awards
  • Calls for expressions of interest to receive personal tuition from Dr Hugh Pringle of EMUTM (Ecosystem Management Understanding).   • Building Better Regions Fund - This program provides funding for infrastructure projects and community investment that will create jobs, drive economic growth and build stronger regional communities into the future. Both streams will open on 18 January 2017. The Infrastructure Projects Stream will close at 5pm local time on 28 February 2017 and the Community Investments Stream will close at 5pm local time on 31 March 2017.
  • The 201718 Coastwest grants round close noon Tuesday, 21 March 2017. Applications are invited for grants of $5,000 – $50,000.
  • Small Grants for Rural Communities (SGRC) close 31 March 2017
  • Grants round from the Aussie Farmers Foundation is now open and closes on 28 February 2017. 
  • Coastal Management Plan Grants (CMPAP) support coastal land managers to develop adaptation plans and strategies for coastal areas that are, or are predicted to become, under pressure from a variety of challenges. Close 21 March.
