”The prose is tight, the dialogue rhythmic, the pacing fast, the violence measured, and the ending unexpected.” – Viet Thanh Nguyen

Crime Reading Group Uppsala

Dodgers – Bill Beverly

Monday 27th February at 19:00

Are you a fan of crime fiction?
Then you’ll love our new reading group!

Great news for all you readers of mystery novels out there: we have the pleasure of introducing a brand new reading circle to you – the Crime Reading Group!

We will meet once a month to discuss a mystery novel, either a more hard-boiled, noir kind of book (from our Tough Crime selection), or a more classic crime (from our BritCrime selection). Joining us to lead these groups is James van Loon, author of the psychological mystery novel Blue Magic Woman

Our first choice is the American novel Dodgers by Bill Beverly.

This is a dark, unforgettable coming-of-age journey, and is the story of a young LA gang member named East, who is sent by his uncle along with some other teenage boys — including East's hothead younger brother — to kill a key witness hiding out in Wisconsin. The journey takes East out of a city he's never left and into an America that is entirely alien to him, ultimately forcing him to grapple with his place in the world and decide what kind of man he wants to become.

Written in stark and unforgettable prose and featuring an array of surprising and memorable characters rendered with empathy and wit, Dodgers heralds the arrival of a major new voice in American fiction.

Our first date is set for Monday 27th February, at 19:00 in the shop. Tea and cake will be served, and you'll be part of an inspiring and rewarding discussion, all for the bargain price of 60 kr (+ 140 kr for the book)!

There are a limited amount of seats, so make sure to sign up, either by replying to this email, or by dropping by the shop and telling us you want to come when you buy the book.

Bring your magnifying glasses and fingerprint gear and let's get going!

Hoping to see as many of you as possible,

James, Stina, Jan and friendly bookshop staff

Our reading groups are informal and relaxed occasions where we get together to discuss a chosen novel and enjoy some tea and cake. We currently run five reading groups: ClassicsScience Fiction, Modern Fiction, Crime, and Teen reading group.

Each meeting is a separate event, so there’s no need to commit to an entire semester of reading groups. Join us when you have the time, and the book of the month interests you.
Do you want to get invitations to reading groups? Update your newsletter subscription profile and mark the groups you are interested in – that way we can keep you informed without sending you information about groups you’re not interested in. (You can also email us and let us know what groups you are interested in, just reply to this email.)
