Big data team heading to ZA

A team from the UK Data Service are in Cape Town this week, delivering the first big data summer school together with South Africa's data service DataFirst. Specifically for data users in South Africa, Encounters with big data #ZABigData17 is a week-long training event.

The summer school is part of the Smarter Household Energy Data project, strengthening partnerships between South Africa and the UK through research into the use of household energy data. See their blog.

Personal well-being event - Wednesday 29 March

Join us for this half day event, organised by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and the UK Data Service. It is free to attend and will be held at Jisc, Brettenham House, London.

Personal well-being data have been collected by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for over five years. This is part of their wider Measuring National Well-being programme which aims to measure what matters most to people in the UK.

The programme contains a mixture of presentations from data producers, policy makers and researchers who use data from the ONS four personal well-being questions.

Undergraduate Dissertation Prize 2017

Building on from the success of the 2016 Dissertation Prize, the UK Data Service will be running the Dissertation Prize for the academic year 2016/17.

So, if you are an undergraduate student using secondary analysis for your dissertation and would you like to share your results with other researchers, users of data and practitioners, then you should enter this years’ competition!

1000th data collection in ReShare

Not yet in the book of World Records, but a true record none-the-less! Congratulations to Prof Lucy Henry and Dr Laura Crane from City, University of London and Dr Rachel Wilcock from the University of Winchester for depositing the 1,000th data collection in our ReShare repository.

New OECD guidelines on research ethics and new forms of data

The guidelines are the culmination of a two year project by an Expert Group, appointed by the OECD Global Science Forum (GSF), and provide a set of high-level recommendations that can be used to underpin the ethical governance of research, from the formulation of research proposals through to publication and dissemination of results.

Matthew Woollard, Director of the UK Data Service, represented the international social science data archive community and the UK on the Expert Group. He explains the significance of the guidelines...

Department for Education: Secondary Data Analysis Initiative

The Department for Education (DfE) has announced a call for proposals to produce insights into policy areas of interest to the Department and to promote the use of the relevant datasets.

The deadline for applications is 10 March 2017.

Understanding Society: Wave 6 data released

Back in November Understanding Society released its latest wave of rich longitudinal data (Wave 6), which features an exciting boost sample for understanding the lives of immigrants in the UK.

Inheritances and Inequality across and within Generations

New research is showing that the wealth of younger generations is now falling behind the wealth of their predecessors at a similar age. Rising house prices and an uncertain job market have impacted the wealth levels of the different generations, making receiving inheritances much more important for the current young generations than it was for older generations.
